West Hills Exercise & Nutritional Science

Overview:  The ENS 9th grade class is designed to provide students witht he knowledge and skills necessary to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle.  The objective of this class is to give students a hands-on experience to the key health and fitness concepts that will EMPOWER them to pursue to a healthy lifestyle.  Students will be exposed to 5 primary elements to obtain this goal.  These elements are:
                            1.  Strength and Fitness
                            2.  Cardiovascular Fitness
                            3.  Rhythm and Movement
                            4.  Lifetime Activity
                            5.  Exercise Science

CONTENT STANDARDS:
The curriculum will be guided by California State Content standards.  There are 3 standards that encompass our goals for students.
        1.  Students will demonstrate knowledge of and competency in motor skills, movement patterns, and strategies needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
        2.  Students achieve a level of physical fitness for health and performance while demonstrating knowledge of fitness concepts, principles, and strategies.
        3.  Students demonstrate knowledge of psychological and sociological concepts, principles, and strategies that apply to the learning and performance of physical activity.

In conjunction with this curriculum, all students will be assessed using criterion-referenced standards known as FitnessGram.  Designed by the Cooper Institute, FitnessGram is a comprehensive assessment tool used to evaluate the health and fitness levels of school aged children.  All students must pass 5 out of the 6 physical fitness tests.  The testing categories include:
                            1.  Cardiovascular Fitness
                            2.  Muscular Strength
                            3.  Muscular Endurance
                            4.  Flexibility
                            5.  Body Composition
*Students who do NOT meet the criteria for passing scores on 5 of the 6 FitnessGram assessments will automatically be enrolled in an ENS class their sophmore year.

Materials Needed:  Students are required to come equipped with basic school supplies (paper, pencils, pens)
including a notebook that is designated specifically for ENS. In addition, students need to come dressed in an
appropriate ENS uniform including athletic shoes, and socks.  The Exercise and Nutritional Science uniform is
$20.00 for the set.  Students may also dress in plain black basketball shorts and a t-shirt that is plain and of school
colors (blue, black, gray, or white).  It is recommended that the student’s name be put on all of their belongings.
Each student will be assigned a locker for their use during the term, and will be responsible for the school lock that
is provided.  If the lock is lost the cost to replace it is $10.00.   West Hills High School is not responsible for lost
 or stolen items.

Loaners:  Loaners are available on a daily basis free of charge. You will need to come into the women's teachers office to loan clothes, shoes, and socks.  If you need socks, there will be a .50 cent charge so we may replace the socks.  You MUST provide us with a collateral item, and when you return the items you borrowed, your item will be returned to you.

Non-Suits:  Students are expected to dress for activity everyday.  Free loaner clothes are available.  Non-suits will receive a loss of credit for that day.  A maximum of 3 non-suits can be made up during the semester.
*Students need to understand the severity of not dressing for class.  Your success in the class will be affected by your decision to not dress out.
**Any student that accumulates 3 non-suits during the semester will automically receive a 'C' in the class.
**Any students that accumulates 6 non-suits during the semester will automatically receive an 'F' in the class.

Grading:  The following components will be calculated into the student’s grade:
*Strenght and Fitness=20%            Rhythm and Movement=20%        Exercise Science(classroom/lab day)=20%
*Cardiovascular Fitness=20%        Lifetime Activity=20%

Medical Conditions and Absences:  A written note from a parent or guardian is required to
excuse or modify students’ participation in class due to a current medical condition.  A Doctor note with specific
limitations is required for any student that is not able to participate for 3 or more days.  Any time that a student is
not able to participate in class activities is still required to dress for class.  A student with more than 15 continuous
school day absences will automatically be dropped from their ENS class.

Make-Ups: Students will be allowed to make up excused absences and up to 3 non-suits.  Students will need to sign up for make-ups on the posted sheet outside of your teachers office.  Students must be dressed in the appropriate ENS attire to participate in the make-up session.

Parent/Family Involvement:
Parent/family support and involvement is crucial to students’ pursuit
of healthy living.  I encourage parents, guardians and family members to ask students about what they are
learning in ENS.  It often creates the opportunity for valuable dialogue.  Better yet, I encourage families to take
the opportunity to find methods for becoming physically active as a family unit as it is a phenomenal way of
reinforcing the importance of healthy living, and can be a whole lot of fun.

ENS/Locker Room Policies:  The following is expected of each student.
Conduct that meets the four Core Values of West Hills.
◊  Respect Yourself!        ◊ Respect the Learning!
◊  Respect Others!          ◊ Respect This Place!
-Students will meet in their assigned roll call area six minutes after the period begins (see tardy policy).
-Water in a clear bottle is encouraged.  There is no food, drink or gum in any ENS facility.
-Each student will be assigned a locker.  All items should be labeled and secured in their
OWN (ASSIGNED) locker at all times with the lock that is provided by the school.  Any lock
that is lost or damaged will result in a $10.00 charge.
-Students are expected to care for and maintain all equipment and facilities.  Any broken or lost
equipment due to failure to follow class guidelines will be the student’s  financial responsibility.
-Loaners are free of charge, if not returned the fee to replace them is $20.00.
-To promote students’ privacy, cell phones will need to be put away in their locker at all times.
-Cell phones are not allowed in any ENS class.
-Students are not allowed to be in the hallway at any time.  Students are to use the side doors labeled
Boys/Girls Locker room to enter and exit.  Students are not allowed to enter and exit through the team
room doors.  Students who use the hallway and or team room doors will be given a referral.

Communication:  Communication between parents, teachers and students is vital.  Feel free to contact
your student’s teacher at the phone number or email address printed on the front of this handout.  We will do our
best to return all calls or emails within 48 hours.  You can also check the school’s web site: http://wolfpack.guhsd.net

Permission Requested: There are 3 things we are requesting parent/guardian permission for in order to
enhance the learning experience for your child this year in ENS.  If you would like your student to be exempted
from any of the below, please indicate on the return portion of this document (the Parent Contact Form).
1. Permission to take your child slightly off campus with the class for participation in supervised walks.
2. Permission to show a PG rated movie that correlates to the class content we are discussing at that time.
3. Permission to take pictures and/or videos of students during lessons.  Pictures will be posted in
classroom, and occasionally on the ENS website without student names attached.
We, the parent/guardian and student, have read and understand the expectations and policies
required by the ENS Department at West Hills High School.
