ENS is designed to provide students with the knowledge and ability necessary to attain and maintain a healthy lifestyle. The emphasis of this class revolves around five key curricular components: Exercise Science, Cardiovascular Fitness, Rhythm and Movement, Lifetime Activities, and Strength and Fitness Building. The objective of this class is to give students a hands-on exposure to key health and fitness concepts that will empower them to pursue a healthy lifestyle. ENS Weekly Schedule: Monday- Strength and Fitness Activities such as ab workouts, tricep dips, lunges, bicep curls, stair runs, etc... Tuesday- Rhythm and Movement Activities such as jump rope, tiniking, dance, swing dance, step aerobics, etc.. Wednesday- Cardiovascular Fitness Fitness incorporating various runs such as 800 meter, 1200 meter, mile, 15 & 20-minute runs, etc.
Thursday- Lifetime activity Activites such as volleyball, bandminton, Ultimate Frisbee, basketball, etc.. Friday- Lab day
Discuss topics such as anatomy, nutrition, exercise, Supersize Me DVD, etc. (homework inclusive).
Grading: The following components will be calculated into the student's overall grade: 20% Lifetime Activity-Team activities 20% Strength and Fitness-Exercises to promote healthy living, strength, coordination, etc. 20% Rhythm & Movement -grades given at the end of a unit -usually a group performance of some type 20% Fitness -improvements on your child's various runs or cardio activities -example: are they getting better each time they run the 800m? 20% Exercise Science -the lab/lecture portion of our class -tests, quizzes, assignments, folder completed, Sportfolios (folder with all classwork organized inside) Fitness Gram Requirements: All freshmen will be required to pass 5 of the 6 fitness tests given in the Spring. If a student does not pass, they will automatically be enrolled in ENS again for their sophomore year. The 6 FitnessGram tests that are administered at West Hills are: push-ups, trunk lift, sit & reach, body composition, mile run, and curl-ups (crunches). We practice these skills numerous times through the first semester before testing all 9th graders during the Spring semester. First Aid Requirement: All ENS students are required to pass a First Aid exam in order to graduate. |
