AEROBIC FITNESS Syllabus COURSE OBJECTIVE: This class is designed to teach a variety of skills and techniques used to perform aerobic (cardiovascular) and strength training activities. The students of this class will participate in a variety of fitness related activities such as hi/lo aerobic fitness, kickboxing, yoga/Pilates, core training and physio-ball exercise. Students will learn the importance of exercise as well as how to live a healthy lifestyle now and for future well-being. Students will develop personal fitness goals and compare and contrast those goals throughout the year. Nutrition education will also be a component of this course. Students will be expected to design and implement some fitness concepts/routines during the course of the year. ABSENCES: -The student is NOT allowed to miss NO MORE than 10 class sessions. If this occurs, the student will receive a NO CREDIT for that class and will have to retake the course. -The student IS allowed to make-up excused absences only in Saturday school (This is for the 10-day absent policy). -If a student is absent from class there will be a DEDUCTION of 5 points from the student’s grade. -It is the STUDENTS RESPONSIBILITY to attend make-up sessions to earn their 5 points back upon an excused absence. TARDIES: -Each student is EXPECTED to arrive on time to class (see tardy policy). -Class begins five minutes after the bell rings, giving 5-minutes to dress out. -Aerobic fitness will meet in the aerobic room. -Students arriving late will be marked tardy resulting in point deduction. MEDICAL NOTES: -A written note from a parent or guardian is required to excuse or modify student’s participation in class due to a current medical condition. A note from a doctor with specific limitations is required for any student that is not able to participate for 3 or more days (get paper from teacher to submit to doctor). ANY TIME that a student is not able to participate in class activities is still required to dress for class. A student with more than 15 continuous school day absences will automatically be dropped from their ENS classes. CLOTHING: PROPER ATTIRE IS REQUIRED FOR THE AEROBIC FITNESS COURSE. THE BELOW WILL GIVE YOU A VERY SPECIFIC LIST OF DO’S AND DON’T’S: DO’S: SCHOOL COLORS!! -Tanks that are 1” or wider -T-shirts-there may be times you will need to tuck them in due to positions for exercise -Fitness shorts or pants -Athletic shoes/tennis shoes -Sports bra. This is essential because you will be sweating a lot!! DON’T’S: -Spaghetti straps -Short shorts/boxers -Bra straps revealed -Flip-flops or sandals of ANY type/UGG boots-NO NO NO! -Regular school clothes. This means ABSOLUTELY NO TANKS OR SHIRTS THAT YOU WORE TO SCHOOL. REQUIREMENTS: The above for clothing as well as: 1. Weights 5 lbs or more (pair). I DO HAVE A LOT, BUT IF YOU WANT YOUR OWN. 2. TOWEL-a large one would be very beneficial! 3. A GOOD-POSITIVE ATTITUDE. NON-SUITS: There SHOULD NEVER BE AN ISSUE WITH NOT DRESSING TO EXERCISE. THIS IS FREE EXERCISE AND AN INVESTMENT in your overall health and well-being. IF YOU ARE NOT FEELING WELL, YOU MUST DRESS AND I WILL MODIFY YOUR ACTIVITY FOR THE DAY. IF THERE IS NO WAY YOU FEEL YOU CAN PARTICIPATE, THAN COME SEE ME AND WE WILL WORK SOMETHING OUT AND PERHAPS YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE-UP THE TIME DURING MAKE-UP DAYS. *A MAXIMUM of 3 non-suits can be made up during the semester. See next line for consequences for non-suits: **Students need to understand the severity of not dressing for class Your success in the class will be affected by your decision to not dress out. **Any student that accumulates 3 non-suits during the semester will automatically receive a 'C' in the class. **Any student that accumulates 6 non-suits during the semester will automatically receive an 'F' in the class. LOANERS-You may loan shoes, shirt, and shorts from the women's teachers office only. You do NOT need to pay, however, if you need socks, a .50 cents for socks is necessary so you may keep them and we will replace them. You MUST leave something for collateral and upon returning the items you will get your item returned. MAKE-UPS:Students will be allowed to make up excused absences and up to 3 non-suits. Students will need to sign up for make-ups on the posted sheet outside of your teachers office. Students must be dressed in the appropriate attire in the make-up session. PLEASE TAKE THIS COURSE SERIOUSLY. NOTHING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOUR HEALTH! LOCKERS: -LOCKERS ARE PROVIDED TO EACH STUDENT ALONG WITH A LOCK. THE STUDENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS LOCK AT THE END OF THE YEAR. -IF THE ENS ATTENDANT (SHEP) FINDS THAT LOCK HAS BEEN REPLACED WITH YOUR OWN, HE WILL CUT IT OFF AND PROVIDE YOU WITH ANOTHER ONE. ********MOST IMPORTANT-DO NOT SHARE A LOCKER. -DON’T SHARE COMBINATIONS. -DON’T BRING LARGE AMOUNTS OF MONEY OR VALUABLES SUCH AS I-PODS, JEWELRY, ETC. -IF ALL YOUR STUFF WILL NOT FIT IN YOUR LOCKER, WE SUGGEST TO PLACE IT IN THE WOMEN’S INSTRUCTOR’S OFFICE OR THE ENS ATTENDANTS ROOM. WEST HILLS IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST OR STOLEN ITEMS. GRADING: -Students will be graded on daily PARTICIPATION, PERFORMANCE AND REQUIREMENTS. -Students will have different categories such as, tests, quizzes, performances, participation, assignments, etc., that will be given a percentage weight and grades will then be calculated accordingly. **75%=Participation 15%=Cardio Fitness 10% Lab (classroom expectations) -The teacher will use a hand-held computer in class daily and the student will have access to their grades on a daily basis, however after class will be most appreciated for grade issue questions. -I DO NOT GIVE GRADES, STUDENTS EARN THEIR GRADES!!!!!!
