Trip Basics: Traveling to Muramba, Rwanda Leaving December 28th 2009 at the earliest Returning January 16th at the latest The Rwanda group is planning to travel to Muramba, Rwanda from December 28th to January 16th to complete several assessments an implementation trip on our current projects. Every project trip taken involves having a trip mentor to provide experience and guidance during the trip. We require a trip mentor in order to travel, and need your help to continue our work in Muramba this year. Technical experience including engineering is preferable, but any experience relative to central Africa, working with communities, French or Kinya-Rwandan language experience, or agriculture will be considered. We plan to send between students to work in 2 main groups. Our assessment this May involves checking up on an agricultural demonstration project we began this January in Muramba parish to spread farming knowledge throughout the community with the help of the local government and the agricultural university in Rwanda, assessing the water infrastructure of the Hindiro primary and secondary schools to possibly improve their water pipeline or install a rainwater catchment system. Priests from the parish of Nyange have also requested we meet with them and do a general assessment of Nyange for possible infrastructure improvements. Since our last trip the community has gotten very excited about the agriculture project, and we have high hopes for what we can achieve together with the Rwandan agriculture university. Your main responsibilities would be helping us evaluate the management and organization of the agriculture project we started in January, assess future water projects for Hindiro, and assess or plan a future assessment for the Nyange parish. It is incredibly valuable for us to have an experienced person along on our trip to help us identify possible solutions, and to meet with local leaders who generally are more comfortable speaking with someone older than college students. Please let us know as soon as you can if you would be willing to help us or if you have any other people in mind, and we can get you more information to work out the logistics for you with this trip. We will be splitting any costs that aren't already covered by current grants across all members of the group so you will not be required to pay for the entire trip, and are dates are flexible to any 2 week period during the travel window listed above. If you are available in May it would help us out immensely. Thanks. More information about the project and a video from a previous trip can be found here. Pictures from past EWB-UW Rwanda events can be found here. If you are a professional engineer please look through the qualifications, which can be found here. And the eventual project mentor form you'd be required to fill out can be found here. -Matt Carlson and Julia Wagner EWB-UW Rwanda group Project Managers ewb.uw.rwanda.pm@gmail.com www.ewbuw.org |
