Engineers Without Borders at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Prescott Chapter, is committed to designing and implementing engineering projects in developing communities around the world.  There is great need in areas ranging from renewable energy to clean water to sustainable enterprise development.  EWB-USA project participants are asked to promote high engineering standards by following the American Society of Civil Engineers' Code of Ethics. There are also many non-engineering aspects to our projects, and we incorporate volunteers with backgrounds in business, journalism, health, education and much more.

EWB-USA offers you several great opportunities to become involved in building a better world one community at a time, whether you are:

· An engineer student

· A student in some other field of study

· A university faculty member

· Not an engineer at all!

Vote for the two (2) projects that are the most appealing to you. We will post the results later, once we have received a fair number of votes. Think about what you really want to work on and remember that this might be something to include on your resume.

In this link you can find the description of each research project:

Dakini Valley Project

posted Sep 6, 2009 12:07 AM by EWB ERAU

If you haven't heard anything about Dakini Valley, in a nutshell: It's a 150 acre site that was a former cattle ranch. The property is now owned by a Buddhist church and they are running a no-kill animal shelter under the name Tara's Babies (www.tarasbabies.org). The site is about 1 1/2 hours from Payson (about half of the drive from there is dirt road). It's completely off the grid, with solar for electric (with a back up propane generator because the solar panels and batteries aren't enough at the moment), well water for drinking, septic, and a small permanent stream which has been used in the past for irrigating crops (they hopefully still have water rights to this).

So far, the tentative arrangement is:

- The Phoenix Professionals Chapter overseeing overall development of the property, more permanent dog shelter and volunteer housing construction, and mentoring of the student chapters.
- ASU taking the lead on designing and building an improved solar and/or wind electricity generation system so that the propane generator can be shut down for good.
- NAU taking the lead in water related components: a new well, water tank, waste-water disposal/treatment, and irrigation/micro-
hyrdroelectric generation.

Engineering Joke

The Airplane

A programmer and an engineer were sitting next to each other on an airplane. The programmer leans over to the engineer and asks if he wants to play a fun game. The engineer just wants to sleep so he politely declines, turns away, and tries to sleep. The programmer persists and explains that it's a real easy game. He explains, "I'll ask a question and if you don't know the answer you pay me $5. Then you ask me a question and if I don't know the answer I'll pay you $5." Again, the engineer politely declines and tries to sleep.

The programmer, now somewhat agitated, says, "OK, if you don't know the answer, you pay me $5, and if I don't know the answer, I'll pay you $50!" Now, that got the engineer's attention, so he agrees to the game. The programmer asks the first question, "what is the distance from the earth to the moon?" The engineer doesn't say a word and just hands the programmer $5.

Now, it's the engineer's turn. He asks the programmer, "what goes up a hill with three legs and comes down on four?" The programmer looks at him with a puzzled look, takes out his laptop computer, looks through all his references and after about an hour wakes the engineer and hands him $50. The engineer politely takes the $50, turns away, and tries to return to sleep.

The programmer, a little miffed, asks, "Well? What's the answer to the question?" Without a word, the engineer reaches into his wallet, hands $5 to the programmer and returns to sleep.
