Bringing home a new baby is a scary and exciting time. Whether it is your first baby or your fifth ( I know personally on that point) every baby is different. They each have their own personality and you will have to learn about them as an individual. This at times can be frustrating at least for the first few weeks, especially if it is your first baby. Patience and napping is a big help. Most new mothers suffer from sleep deprivation. Trying to please everyone, cooking, cleaning, taking care of a baby and ignoring yourself IS NOT going to help anyone in the long run. So nap when the baby does, soon enough you will be in a routine and you will be able to accomplish more and more in a day, but for now rest and enjoy the baby.
I have found a great book that you can reference as a new mother. It is packed with valuable information and it only costs $5.99 You can get it right here. Some babies are easier to get to know than others, so don't feel to overwhelmed when your searching the net and all the advice you see is not working for you. Remember your baby is a person and unfortunately for us they cannot tell us what they want yet. So if your baby is a crier and you are feeling way overwhelmed, tired and completely out of control IT'S OK your allowed to feel that way it doesn't make you a bad parent or crazy (however if you feel overly sad, depressed or out of control you may need to talk to someone about post partum depression, it is real and you should talk to someone so you can get help). We all suffer a normal amount of anxiety after having a baby, trying to get to know an adult who can communicate with words is difficult enough, so cut yourself a break and take your time getting to know this little person. Sometimes a baby cries just because its nervous, its whole world is different, just like yours. The baby came from a dark, warm, relatively quiet place and then all of a sudden it bursts into this bright, loud, cold and obnoxious world, it can be a bit overwhelming for them. That is why I am a firm believer in swaddling and a good battery operated swing. These 2 things saved me when I had my kids. I also found that when it came to bottle feeding nothing beats a playtex nurser, they reduce air which reduces gas which creates happier babies who sleep better. If you choose to breast feed expect to feed about every 2 hours at first, when your milk comes in fully it could be less. I did breastfeed all 5 of my children until they were a few weeks old, but I found that they were not getting enough milk to be full. I did not produce enough milk, but it was good that they got the colostrum from the early feeding which is very important in building their immune systems. So if you find it difficult to breastfeed or you do not produce enough milk, don't feel like a failure just get some playtex nursers and get on with loving your baby. Getting your baby to sleep may be a bit difficult after the first month, they get more and more active as they get older so they may not sleep as much as they did as newborns. I have found an audio book which has been very helpful its from Chris Towland and offers 23 different techniques, focusing on the individuality of each baby. You can CLICK HERE to access their site and download the audio book for $19.00. He offers a " baby sleeps or money back guarantee" if your not getting getting the sleep you need its definitely worth the money. If you find your baby sleeps all day and then wants to be up all night its body clock may be off. In other words it has the days and nights mixed up try switching bath time. If you currently are giving baths in the morning you may have a baby that gets tired after a bath so he/she sleeps all day and vice versa if you are giving baths at night and the baby is up all night you may have a baby that is stimulated by a bath. Try switching up and see how that works. When dealing with babies try something different when you need to, there are no instructions that come with a baby so it will be a lot of trial and error, when in doubt ask your doctor. Here are few remedies that I have found very helpful when I had newborns: 1) constipation- give 3 drops clear karo syrup in a 1 1/2 oz bottle with warm purified water 2) won't sleep- very mild and diluted chamomile tea (my doctor recommended it but ask yours before you try it) 3) diaper rash- when your baby has a diaper rash do not use wipes but a baby washcloth with no rinse johnson soap (if your baby develops diarhea as a newborn you should consult your doctor asap to make sure he/she does not have a milk allergy you may need to switch to a soy formula, I did) 4) cradle cap- flaky dry skin on scalp, use baby oil and a baby hair cleansing brush, should clear up in about a week 5) Thrush- If you find your baby is crying while being fed and develops white or yellowish coating in its mouth he/she may have thrush and this requires a trip to the doc its not dangerous but is very painful On a more fun topic BABY CLOTHES! I always loved buying clothes, dressing up my kids was my favorite thing to do. I always wanted them to look great, I was young (only 26 by the time my husband and I had 5 kids, so it was very important to me that our kids looked good. We didn't have much money and I didn't want people to judge my children based on the clothes they wore and unfortunately people do.) So I always made sure they looked like little million dollar children, However I never spent much on clothes. I am a very thrifty shopper. I utilized flea markets, goodwill and consignment shops a lot. Ebay was also very new when my kids were young and I get some great deals on clothes there. I only ever bought designer clothes, but I never paid designer prices. So don't feel like you have to spend a ton of money to have fabulous looking kids. Use ebay and craigslist and amazon, it is a win-win for evryone. The people selling make money they need and you get great deals on name brand items. My kids are now teens and adults but they still love Ebay, Amazon and Craigslist. They even flea market and go to goodwill, it really does help out everyone. When your kids grow out of clothes if you don't have someone in need you should sell on these sites to make some extra money. I do it all the time and I make an extra couple hundred a month. Baby clothes are huge sellers on Ebay, Baby items are huge on Craigslist and everything is huge on Amazon. Most importantly have fun, enjoy your baby and try never to take yourself to seriously. Life, kids and grand kids are supposed to be enjoyable.
