Science Fair Packet   ***Do Not Print This Packet at School!!***

There may be a few pages in the packet that you might need if you lose the copy that your teacher gave to you. You may print these if you need to. See the attachments below, download then print.

1. Remember you have free and easy access to the JCPL Databases to use for your science fair project!

Click on the following link to:  JCPL Databases.
Go to the Purple tab called "Research Tools" then scroll down to
"Subject Guides" and click on "Science/Math."
In the box at the top there are some good sites to go for your research. Make sure you check out:
                 Science in Context
                 Science Online
                 Kids Infobits
Hint: For logging in to the databases : username: everitt     password: 260026000 or use your own library card!

2.   Under "More Library Sources", look at "Kids pages-Science"
Under "Search the Library Catalog" click on "Science" to look up books in the public library.

3.     Then go below to Selected Websites to look for information on your science fair project.
A few reliable sites that I suggest you take a look at are:
Your teacher has already told you about  Science Buddies to help you decide on a topic. Other great websites to go to for reliable
        and accurate information are:

Discovery News         Explore Learning             Popular Science           Science Daily

Remember!  When looking on Google for information the most reliable sites are usually
ones that end in .edu or .gov or possibly .org.

Key Word Searching: Think of all the words that are related to your topic. Keep it to a few words or the search engine will get confused.Try using them in your searches. Write down the keywords that helped you find the most information. See your teacher or librarian for ideas!

Citations! You are required to do a Works Cited Page. Don't forget to write down the correct citation as you take notes on your "It Says, I Say, So" graphic organizer . If you need help deciding how to cite something just click on this link to the Cite it Right pages.

4. Research Graphic Organizer: It Says, I Say, So...  (put your name on it!)
Claim: Write your claim or research question at the top! Try putting different words in the following blanks...
What is the effect of _________________________ on ________________________?
How/to or to what extent does the __________________ affect __________________?
Which/what _____________(verbs like changes, lowers, causes) _________________?
What is the ideal __________ (time, temperature, concentration) for _______________?

It Says... What the text says (Make sure to put quotes around copied words or information).
I Say...  Your thoughts or reaction to that information. Your own words!
So...  How does this information support your claim or answer to the question? Your own words possibly with some quotes in it!
Think about where in your Research Paper might this information be useful and write that down (in parentheses) after your writing so you can easily find it later!
Complete Source Citation: Copy it from the JCPL Database! Very Important! You must write down the entire citation!
Check the proper source box (book, website database, etc.) and if a database put in the database name (i.e. Science Online, Science in Context, etc.)
