Yoga for Depression: An 8 Week Workshop
September 20th through November 15th, 2009 ( No class on October 4th) Sunday Evenings 7-8:30pm Cost $160 Instructor: Carey DeMartini LMHC, ATR-BC, RYT-500
Instructor phone conversation required for admission Carey DeMartini (206) 200-2173 Depression manifests as our inability to be present for the experience of life.” Stephen Cope
The practice of yoga can provide physical relief for symptoms that often accompany depression as well as calm the flow of negative thoughts, help to release stuck emotions, decrease anxiety, and allow for greater overall balance between the mind and body. We will explore how yoga philosophy, asana practice, and creativity can liberate us from living in the past or future to being in the present moment. We will incorporate meditation techniques, chanting, art, pranayama, yoga postures, and dialogue into our practices and cultivate a field where our relationship to the inner witness that resides in us all, who sees all, and knows that we are already prefect and whole can grow and thrive. This 8 week long workshop is designed to offer tools for individuals who are currently experiencing mild-moderate depression. It is not intended to be a substitute for therapy, but would be a supportive adjunct to current treatment.
You'll receive our monthly Mandala Info Studio Newsletter. Here you will find articles, links, and practical ideas on using mandalas and the MARI Assessment for personal growth and in counseling practice.
I invite you to join me to learn about the MARI Assessment, a holistic and non-verbal approach to gaining insights into clients' current psychological and physical state. The MARI and drawn mandalas can also be used to reinforce and track client progress.
Based
on Carl Jung's work, these tools have beneficial uses for therapists,
mental health practitioners, clergy, life coaches and expressive arts
therapists.
You will find the MARI Assessment and drawn mandalas
highly useful for you personally and professionally. I look forward to
seeing you!
Sincerely,
Chris Brewer, MA FAMI

With the growing understanding of the mind/body connection for greater mental health, both yoga and art offer profound ways of connecting people to their authentic source. Many types of clients respond to the sense of groundedness that creativity and movement bring to the experience of counseling.
In this experiential workshop, learn how to bring a mindfulness-based practice to sessions with clients. Find out what helps clients find their own sense of personal power in the therapeutic process. Develop confidence in integrating art and yoga with clients by addressing a range of clinical issues. Gain an understanding of the basics of the chakra system for emotional well-being, the essentials of yoga therapy and Jungian art therapy, as well as the use of mandala and color work with clients.
Basic art materials will be provided. Please bring a yoga mat and any "props" (such as a foam block, cushion, etc.) you may need. Wear comfortable clothes.

When:
Sunday, December 7, 1:00PM
Come
join us at the Frye to celebrate the power of art and transformation.
12-1 PM Officers meeting: you are welcome to join us.
1-3 PM we will start out in the Frye Café, making small portable
images/objects representing how the winter season can be a time of rest
and rejuvenation.
Make a small card or image to help you stay connected with your divine
center as the holiday season tries its hardest to grab it away from
you. Bring some paper, markers or glittery glue, crinkly scissors or
ribbon to share . If so inspired look for small magazine images that
make you think of grounding, centering, rejuvenation of this rainy,
foggy environment.
The Frye has an exhibit about the use of metaphor and projection until
Jan 09. Check it out!
