Dickens Revisited - Homeless Children in Evanston

posted Apr 16, 2010 8:07 AM by Mindy Wallis

The League of Women Voters of Evanston and the PTA Council are co-sponsoring a panel entitled "Dickens Revisited?  Homeless Children in Evanston" on April 28 at 11:45 am at the North Shore Retirement Hotel, 1611 Chicago Avenue.

Expert panelists will define the current situation of homeless children nationally, in the Chicago areas and in Evanston.  They will outline ongoing efforts to support these children, and challenge the audience to consider what further efforts are needed in the community, and how individuals can assist them.  The panel will be moderated by Paul Selden, from Evanston's Connection for the Homeless, and will include Joyce Bartz from District 65, Tom Bookler, North Shore Suburban County  Homeless Liaison Regional Office of Education,  and Don Baker, Executive Director of Youth Organizations Umbrella (YOU).

The luncheon meeting is open to the public and includes lunch for a cost of $15.  Reservations should be made at the League office by calling 847-866-7844.

Support School Gardens - Shop Whole Foods on April 7th

posted Apr 6, 2010 12:42 PM by Mindy Wallis

On April 7, Evanston’s two Whole Foods stores will each donate five percent of their net profits to support Schools Actively Gardening in Evanston/Skokie (SAGE).

An outgrowth of PTA Council’s Healthy Communities activities, SAGE was formed last year after organizers of the Dawes school’s six-year-old, volunteer-run edible garden program discovered that nine Dist. 65 schools have edible gardens at least in the planning stages.  SAGE and Keep Evanston Beautiful, Inc. are collaborating on programs that aim to help children learn the connection between healthy food, exercise and wellness.  Partners include Evanston Food Policy Council, PTA Council, our two school districts and municipal governments

Such community initiatives would get a boost nationwide through a proposed provision in the new Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act—co-sponsored by Cong. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston)—to create an annual $10M competitive grant fund to support the launch and development of farm-to-school programs.

Next steps on the federal legislative strategy will be discussed at Wednesday’s Task Force meeting. (Agenda to follow.)

For more information on SAGE, contact Lynn Hyndman…garden coordinator for Dawes school & Keep Evanston Beautiful, Inc.

On Monday, July 20, 2009, the District 202 Board of Education (Evanston Township High School) passed a resolution proposed by the PTA Council Joint Legislative Task Force, which acts as a liaison with our lawmakers in Springfield and Washington.  The Task Force, chaired by Bob Heuer, solicited input from nutrition services officials and experts from around the country to devise a resolution highlighting state and federal legislation that could spur improvements to school meal and wellness programs.  The resolution was written in collaboration with the Evanston Food Policy Council and is being promoted by the PTA Council’s Healthy Communities Task Force. The PTA Council as a whole passed the resolution at the May 21 meeting and brought the resolution to the boards of school districts 65 and 202.
