“Hero, Villain, Yeti: Tibet in Comics”
Characters as diverse as Mickey Mouse, the historical Buddha, Tomb Raider Lara Croft, and the Green Lama have something in common: Tibet. For more than sixty years Tibet has figured in comic books from around the world, at times creating and at times perpetuating notions of an otherworldly land roamed by the yeti, inhabited by wise and powerful lamas, or full of dark magic.
Hero, Villain, Yeti features the most complete collection of comics related to Tibet ever assembled, with examples ranging from the 1940s to the present. More than fifty comic books from the Belgium, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, and the United States reflect on the depiction of Tibet, tracing the historical roots of prevailing perceptions and stereotypes and their visual and narrative evolution over time.

Vivian Maier: Unseen Images
Exhibition: April 12th - May 26th
Opening Reception: April 12th, 6-8pm
Also Showing: Chip Simone
Steven Kasher Gallery is delighted to again present the recently discovered work of Vivian Maier. Vivian Maier: Unseen Images features 35 black and white prints. When Maier died in 2009, she left behind more than 120,000 negatives and 2,000 undeveloped rolls of film. Last year, a couple hundred of these rolls, shot in the 1960s and 1970s, were finally developed. A selection of these images make their debut in this exhibition.
Maier, whose day job was as a nanny, made over 100,000 distinctive street photographs, mostly in New York City and Chicago. What is known about Ms. Maier is that she was born in New York in 1926, lived in France (her mother was French) and returned to New York in 1951. Five years later, she moved to Chicago, where she worked for about 40 years as a nanny, principally for families in the North Shore suburbs. On her days off she wandered the streets of New York and Chicago, most often with a Rolleiflex camera. She did not share her pictures with others; many of them she never saw herself.

Before They Were Famous:
Behind The Lens of William John Kennedy
American photographer William John Kennedy’s exhibition of newly published prints of Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana is believed to be the only such images in existence capturing the artists with their works, among them Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe and Indiana’s LOVE. After almost half a century in storage, a select number of the nearly forgotten images were carefully chosen, and are now being published for the first time as a collection.

HULLABALOO! LONG GONES, The Foxx, American Sun, Jigglers, DJs @DON PEDRO
Saturday, May 19, 2012
9:00pm until 3:00am
A wopbabaloobopawapbamBOOZle!
If you're like us, you've just recovered from your St. Patrick's Day hangover. And you're ready for more.
Good news! We're back once again at the home of the primitive, Brooklyn's Don Pedro, with an all star and all new (to us anyway) bill of greatness !
Topping the bill are Ohio's LONG GONES, whose recent collection of lost gems 'Highway Sound' woke a lot of folks up to one of the few current bands worth spelling 'Cincinnati' correctly for. More recently they've been favorites of Joe Belock's Three Chord Monte program on WFMU (where they'll be recording a set on this trip) and recorded with Peter Greenberg of DMZ/Barrence Whitfield fame.
Supporting these dudes are the ladies of THE FOXX, a glammed up groop of Bowie stompers from New Mexico via NYC and AMERICAN SUN, an all Brooklyn conglomeration of local ladies whose 7" drew a glowing MRR review last month!
As always, DJs Charles Gaskins and Shimmy will put their own sit'n'spin on the night, guaranteed to keep you moving (and drinking!)

Gemini & Scorpio
present
Peepshow Carnival
Sun, May 27, must RSVP for Gowanus, BK address, 5pm-12am (or so), cheap/sliding scale
Every year Team in Training, the largest endurance sports training program in the world, raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society by offering training for the New York City marathon and triathlon (.9 mile swim + 25 mile bike ride + 6.2 mile run). In order to participate and in exchange for the training, each participant is asked to raise a minimum of $2900 for the non-profit.
Gemini & Scorpio's longtime door person, stage manager and all-around right-hand-man, Sal Genna, has stepped up to train and participate in the triathlon -- and we have stepped up to help him raise the money for this cause. Of course, we're going to do it in slightly askew G&S fashion.
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, step right up to the Peepshow Carnival, a loft wonderland of midway games of skill and chance made up mostly of...marshmallow peeps. That's right, for the first time ever (we hope), show your mettle at games of: Bobbing For Peeps, Shoot The Peep, Peep Eating Contest, Peep Darts, Peep Toss, Peep Jousting, How Many Peeps in a Jar, and lots more! Play the games, eat the peeps, earn gold stars, and trade them in for Secret Prizes!
The Peepshow is going to take place inside and on the roof our as-yet-unfinished loft in Gowanus, BK, on Memorial Weekend Sunday, May 27, 5pm to 12am. We're looking for artists and volunteers to participate in making this most absurd fundraiser happen, specifically crafting and running the games. Won't you run away and join the Carnival? Email us: gs at geminiandscorpio.com with the words "Peepshow Carnival" in the subject. We'd love to have you!

WOW. Performance Art Showcase.
For the most part, Performance Art gets a bad reputation. It is
notorious for being abrasive, awkward, long, elitist and most of
all... confusing. Even with pure intentions of questioning definitions
and pushing boundaries, the audience is often left simply asking....
"What The F*ck?". Even as we honor the mavericks of Futurism and
Fluxus, we have to remember... that was then, and this is NOW. As we
know, the name itself refuses to be defined and can be anything and
everything, but on June 2nd we are bringing you a collection of the
best Performance Art in New York that is specifically designed to be
provocative, innovative, fierce, fabulous, and most importantly...
ENTERTAINING! Let us WOW you.
