posted May 13, 2011 10:13 AM by Nicola Osborne

Things are hotting up at Eurovision HQ. We are printing the zine, baking the cake, paintng the flags and getting all the final arrangements in place for a Eurovision Extravaganza tomorrow night!

Remember you just have one night to pick your country, build your page and prepare your choice of patriotic dish! :D

Have you built your wiki page yet?

posted May 9, 2011 3:32 PM by Nicola Osborne

If you haven't built your wiki page yet you have but 5 days to get creative. So far we're already seeing three fantastic wiki pages:
Be delighted, be amazed, and get your page built! Heather says it's easy, even she can do it! (and she's a bit scared of wikis!)

Learn German the Eurovision Way!

posted May 8, 2011 4:10 PM by Nicola Osborne   [ updated May 8, 2011 5:03 PM ]

In researching our zine every year we find marvellous things and, looking into Germany, the German language and German comedy we came across the most fantastic section on the BBC's website for German learners.

What's Funny About the Germans
sees Henning Wehn, self-appointed Comedy Ambassador for Germany (and regular guest of awesomeness on Radio 4 panel shows), exploring German language and culture in a highly informative and gigglesome manner. For instance have you ever considered the extreme excitement that is Waiting for the Verb?!

To see Henning's less officially informative take on the German sense of humour you can see his warm up for Stewart Lee:

Get Ready for Semi Final 1

posted May 8, 2011 3:20 PM by Nicola Osborne

We are just 6 days away from the Eurovision final and that means things have reached a frenzy here in Eurovision Towers!

As we finalise the awesome 2011 quiz, zine, cake and prizes we thought that you may want to get yourselves prepped for the big day (especially if you haven't picked a country yet!). So here is our guide to Eurovision resources.

General Eurovision News
http://www.eurovision.tv/ is undoubtedly the best place to start your Eurovision journey. You can join their social network doncha know!

BBC Website
If you want to know more about Blue than you ever conceived of possibly wanting to know then head to: http://www.bbc.co.uk/eurovision/

Popbitch
This year our favourite gossipy online catty pop culture fix is going all out on the Eurovision coverage: http://www.popbitch.com/home/

Paddy O'Connell
Our very very favouritist Eurovision presenter/commentator/reviewer/etc. He is fabulous and in Dusseldorf Tweeting (a bit) throughout the week: @paddy_o_c

And finally you absolutely must watch these treasures on 4OD now! (They are up all May!)

The Secret History of Eurovision
Fantastic Eurovision documentary that captures why we love it so very much. Also features lots of Ruslana's, all kinds of Dana's and Paddy O'Connell playing a ukelele. We consider this a huge MUST SEE!

Sounds Like Teen Spirit
The essential guide to the teen version of Eurovision. We saw this on it's release thanks to Sarah's fantastical eye for Eurovision candy. The kids are charming, occasionally scary, always energised and seriously talented one and all since Junior Eurovision requires the kids to write the songs not just perform them. Take that mediocre adult performers!

Latest Popbitch Eurovision Update

posted May 8, 2011 2:35 PM by Nicola Osborne

Paula has pointed us at the latest excellent Eurovision filled Popbitch Update.

Amongst the important Eurovision stuff in this issue Popbitch have shared the following thoughts on the big Western European competitors [our comments in brackets]:
  • France - have sent a cross between Hanson and Russell Watson. Big favourite and could walk it if people take to opera. [Not going to happen - his look is far too 1996!]
  • Italy - first entry since 1997 and they seem to have sent their Jamie Cullum. Sings with his eyes shut though - will lose him votes. [Good description of the singing but they fail to mention his very strange video featuring film clips in the background. When your video makes Jedwards look better planned you have to wonder...]
  • Denmark - catchy and anthemic pop. Wil llose the bookies a load of money if it wins (including to us as we took a punt when it was stupidly long odds.). [We respectfully disagree, it sounds like the dance remix of an album track from a later Human League album. And not in a good way.]
  • Norway - would have been the perfect World Cup theme one-hit wonder [Yeah, fair enough. We love the Casio keyboard factor.]
  • Germany - Lovely Lena is back to defend her crown. Love the song but no-one has ever done the double. [Actually your factoid isn't entirelytrue Popbitch... ]
You can view Popbitch's recommended countries here:

Top PB betting/backing/selection tips
  • Don't back Hungary (so say rehearsal spies)
  • Azerbaijan are the big favourites for the first semi final [bit of a shame - sounds like ColdPlay meets Take That and Snow Patrol for a particularly rubbish Grey's Anatomy montage].
  • Dana International's brother is called Nimrod.

In Blue News...
The band have arrived in Dusseldorf following an absolute schmoozefest around Europe. They've also recently become animated (yes, they always looked like they could be a lot more animated!):

On a related note: Blue have adopted an orangutan. He's called Blue.

And Finally...

We bet you are wondering what the food was like at the Eurovision opening party aren't you?!

The Guardian Loves Eurovision!

Two Eurovision headlines in today's Guardian!

Portugal's Eurovision Protest will entirely change your mind about the Portuguese Eurovision entry. Maybe you thought it was just some sort of surreal performance piece. Well it is. And it isn't. And it's a pair of comedians but you should vote for them according to Susana Moreira Marques - but she's not going to a cool party where you could be Portugal... !

Can't remember their track? Have a look below and choose fast if you want them!

Research Unearths True Meaning of Eurovision
covers not the song contest itself but it's place in academic research. Oh yeah!

Düsseldorf! (Come Closer)

posted May 1, 2011 8:34 AM by Nicola Osborne

Whilst researching the zine we have come across a truly marvellous piece of marketing bumph. If you've ever desired a midatlantic voice-over on the merits of trade conference hosting in Düsseldorf then look no further...

France top Ladbrokes' Eurovision Odds

posted May 1, 2011 7:15 AM by Nicola Osborne

Still trying to pick a country? We've had a quick look at Ladbrokes' Eurovision odds and it makes for interesting reading. Ladbrokes have clearly decided France are the best bets (11/4) this year but France has been claimed (clever Lauren) so you'll need to look further down the list for inspiration. The UK is still available and looking good at 7/1 with Hungary, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Azerbaijan all close behind. FYR Macedonia meanwhile is only attracting 400/1.

Or perhaps you'd like to stick to one of the more obscure odds tables - Best Nordic Country for instance (Sweden is sitting at the top at 11/10).

Obviously we think you should base your country on your enjoyment of the song, your passion for the cuisine or your inspiration for wiki page awesomeness but better odds might help you decide between choices. Good luck!
