Dec 19, 2009

On Saturday Dec 19, 2009 at 9:30am, meet in front of the Carson Mansion for a tour highlighting Eureka's "Grand Dames."
We will visit a few of Eureka's largest, most impressive and classic Victorians. These Vickys are all three stories and covered with gingerbread, turrets, turned columns, brackets, swags, in beautiful colors. There aren't very many that are all within walking distance, so this walk will include some long stretches of just plain walking, 6 to 8 blocks, in between viewing some of Eureka's most ornate and largest Victorians.

Unknown Waterfront

There is a section of the Bay Waterfront that is "unknown" simply because there are no streets or sidewalks or trails leading to it or along side it. If you drive in the area, you can't even really tell that the bay is right there! Where there are no streets, sidewalks, or trails, and where there is private property, who knows what is there? It's UNKNOWN.

Starting at the Adorni Center and heading north towards Target and the 101 bridge, Discovery Walkers tried to stay along the bay waterfront but learned of the many obstacles to walkers who want to do that, thus the name, the "Unknown Waterfront." However, we enjoyed many wonderful views and great weather. This is a great walk.

This railroad track leads from Blue Ox through to the Samoa Bridge, and there is no road or trail other than the RR track- the city street is at least a block inland. In one direction, you can walk across the Eureka Slough parallel to the 101 bridge. In the other direction, the RR heads back towards the Samoa Bridge.

Under the 101 Bridge is really cool, and hopefully, one day, we will have a trail along the entire waterfront of the Bay from north to south, and here at the north end, under the bridge to connect with trails around the city through the south or "back" end of the city and / or through the city connecting to shopping, schools, parks, and other points of interest.
