When you hear the words religious youth group, what do you think of? A bible study group, or a group of hyper teenagers bowling at midnight?
Well, we don't know what you think of, but we sure know what's more fun! And how do we know? Because we do it.
Etz Hadar's USY program is technically a religious youth group. I mean, we get movies by Ben Stein, sure but do we watch them? Our idea of a good movie is Spaceballs, or Hanukkah Homeboy for goodness' sake. But even though it seems like its all fun and games, it isn't always. Sometimes, we're forced to do actual work with our Hire a USYer program. And there are the car washes, although washing cars is wayy fun. But you get the point. USY is an experience of a lifetime, from Convention to LEAD, watching movies to getting kidnapped at 7 in the morning (don't worry, its planned out, not spontaneous).
It's a religious youth group.
With crazy kids.

According to the Department of Youth Actvities at the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism ...
USY was founded in 1951 and has grown from a handful of chapters to an international organization with thousands of members. USY was concieved as a means of meeting the social, educational, religious, and recreational needs of our young people. USY seeks to involve our youth in synagogue life and help to build the Jewish community of the future. Furthermore, USY is a Zionist organization, trying to build a relationship between Israel and our members here in America. One measure of our success is that we have begun to produce our own leaders - as many advisors, youth workers, Rabbis, sysnagogue presidents, etc., are themselves former USY 'ers. |
