The invention of writing marked a major milestone in man’s cultural development. Beginning with this milestone many cultures began to evolve from strictly oral traditions to written ones. Since the art of writing was discovered, nearly every form of writing material has been used. What follows is a brief historical summary of the more commonly used materials from stone to paper, stick to pen as well as a brief discussion on how paper and pen has impacted man's development.
