The aims of the project
The School of Engineering Sciences is leading a project at the University of Southampton on the development of team working competencies which will ultimately be used to:
- Develop a common terminology for team working skills development within the curriculum
- Identify any gaps in team working and related competencies that could be met by curriculum change
- Enable graduates to be more confident in communicating their competencies to employers
Phase One: will use a collaboration of industry experts, research staff from the School of Psychology, and crucially a student team from the School of Engineering Sciences (SES) to develop the key competency tools and resources.
Phase Two: will see the prototype version rolled out via the Group Design Projects in SES, the School of Civil Engineering and the Environment (CEE) and the School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) to enhance these key employability skills in their own students. By additionally including non-engineering students in the testing of the on-line tool, the resources and processes will be applicable to any academic school or student group
Deliverables
- An online teamwork competency self-assessment tool that will be industry validated, adaptable and can easily evolve and be adapted if required
- A model of an engaging and innovative interactive workshop around developing teamworking skills
- An audit of good practice in team building diagnostic and development activities (from within the University and from industry), the outcomes of which that can be shared across the University and used as a resource on the LATEU website
