The ESRA Adult ADHD Support Group is launching a new activity: Peer Group Coaching. Peer group coaching is done in the framework of the ongoing Adult ADHD Discussion Support Group, a self help group that has been active for 2 years. The group provides an open and friendly environment for discussing issues that member have in their everyday lives. Life coaching is a practice with the aim of helping people determine and achieve personal goals. Life Coaching can be extremely valuable for ADHD adults. Prioritization, motivation and organization are perennial problems for ADHD adults and coaching can be a means of overcoming obstacles and moving ahead with a life agenda. Coaching isn’t about being told what to do but rather exploring those things inside that reflect who we really are. Coaching is about discovering what truly motivates us and tapping into internal resources to achieve those things that are genuinely important to us in our personal and professional lives. Life Coaching is usually done with a trained Life Coach on an individual basis. However, coaching doesn’t need to be 1 on 1. Another approach to coaching is in a group of peers. Peer Group Coaching is a recognized coaching technique and is used by executive coaching firms worldwide. ADHD adults have a special set of challenges in coaching. Sometimes utilizing a group of other people that are confronting the challenges of their ADHD can add a different perspective that Life Coaches not familiar with ADHD may not fully appreciate. Peer group sessions allow members to share their collective experience and wisdom and address the more demanding challenges and opportunities they face in their personal and professional lives. Members of the Peer Coaching Group will formulate their own Personal Agenda. The Agenda spells out those goals that the individual wants to achieve or the aspects of their life that they want to improve. The group as a whole provides guidance, input and feedback so that each individual member can work on expressing the goals in their Personal Agenda and defining and honing the individual steps needed to accomplish these goals. Through the active participation of the group members, even the most daunting and overwhelming personal goal is achievable. Peer Group coaching is only an option for those participating in the support group. Members need not set an agenda and are welcome to come, listen and discuss any issues that they want to address. The group meets twice a month in the evening. |
