Stuff to do in your first week

-get keys/codes for the doors you need access to.  Useful ones: Mulford outside door, the outside door to the building your office is in (because these buildings may be locked during off hours when you might need to get in), your office (of course), the mail/copyroom in Mulford and possibly one in your building if there is one.  The person to see about this right now is Dale Maddox (keys) and Antonio Gamez (key codes) but this will all change in January 2010 when the staff is 'centralized.'

-There is usually some HR paperwork to sign (hiring stuff, W-4 for witholdings, etc)

-if you are not a California resident, there are things you might want to start as soon as possible so when you apply for residency next year you are more likely to get it (like changing your voter registration, driver's lisence, etc... someone else with more experience on this can add more here)

-set up your CalNetID and your berkeley.edu email address.  Check your contact information on BearFacts to make sure everything is accurate (and also if you don't want your name all in caps on bSpace and don't want to reveal your middle name to everyone in a class with you)

-Go to the Cal1Card office across from the Bear's Lair (Sproul plaza) to get your student ID

-Once your registration fees are paid for a semester, go to the same general location to get your "Classpass" which is a sticker that goes on your ID that allows you to ride AC transit for free.

-get on the espm-gradstudents mailing list.  There may be a lot of messages, but I promise you you'll miss something important if you don't.  This is the one-stop location for people to communicate with all of us ESPM grads - so courses get announced here and nowhere else sometimes, there are social events you might miss, and job offers and seminars you might want to know about.  You'll need to see the Grad Student Coordinator about this.

-get access to eESPM (if it still exists after the 'centralization' in January 2010).  This will give you access to some forms which will be very helpful for things like travel reimbursement.

-Figure out what you need to do regarding timesheets.   See "getting paid" for more info.

-Make sure you're registered for 12 units

-For GSI's - do the trainings you are required to do; also there may be some safety trainings for GSRs as well.

-You may need to deal with purchase orders early on if you are setting up your office or something like that.  See forms for more information.
