Zachary's is famous for Chicago-style deep dish pizzas (on College near Oakland). Cesar Chavez park has a glorious kite festival every summer, and kites taunting the FAA most days of the week. The Bay Area in general is a great place for social dancing, from Ashkenaz for drop-in nights with an ethnographic breadth to the Gaskells for Victorian history in costume. If you're a total beginner, BACDS and Berkeley Folk Dance are nearby and friendly. Like all great college towns, Berkeley also has excellent ice cream. The best (arguably) is ici, a little storefront on College Ave just north of Ashby (Francophones will recognize that the name is a pun). Look for the line out the door. You will not regret taking the plunge and ordering one of the more unusual flavors - basil and rosemary pine nut praline are particular treats. |
