  • GIF (Geospatial Innovation Faciltity): The GIF is found in 111 Mulford Hall. Here you can find a computer lab with any geospatial softwares you might need (GIS, remote sensing, etc.). They provide one day training seminars, rent GPS field equipment, and hold regular office hours. If you have any GIS or remote sensing questions, or need specialized software, this is the place to go first.

  • Machine shop There isn't much of a department machine shop. There is a drill press, maybe a little more, in the basement of Hilgard: bring your own bits. I never found out who controls access.
If you want absolutely beautiful work done, the Cory Hall Machine Shop can do it, including some design. They did something for me that was precise enough to be inconvenient: spec carefully.

If you're expecting to use a lot of machines, I believe there's a class in Civil Engineering that earns you the right to use their student machine shop.

And, from left field, there are non-academic tool/shop collectives that allow you access for a periodic fee; Ace Monster Toys is in Emeryville, Noisebridge in San Francisco, there may be others. Also look into the commercial CNC/lasercutting/sintering services at Ponoko and so forth.
