PE SYLLABUS

ESMS Physical Education Syllabus

PHILOSOPHY

Physical Education is the only subject, which by the very nature of its content has the potential to affect how a person will feel every moment of every day for the rest of his or her life.

The Physical Education Department at ESMS has as one of its goals to help each student become their own personal trainer.  We want to incorporate a Fitness Based curriculum into our current Sports Centered Program.  We want to give our students the tools to become fit and healthy for the rest of their lives.  Today’s brain, mind, and body research establishes significant links between movement and learning.

PE STANDARDS

The new California State Framework’s for kindergarten through eighth grade can be found at the following link: http://www.cde.ca.gov/CI/pe/cf/peframwrk2008.asp

P.E. DAILY PARTICIPATION & ATTENDANCE

Since physical education is a participation class, students can earn 10 points per day. (You receive 0 points for the day if you are absent.)  Therefore, you will need to complete a 10 point make up assignment in order to earn that day(s) points (SEE MAKE UP ASSIGNEMENTS IN BACK OF SYLLABUS).  When an assignment is turned in, the points will show in the assignment column: Make-up/Extra Credit.  You have one week to complete the assignment.  Failure to complete the assignment will result in zero points for the day. You must have the proper shoes when the bell rings. You can also lose participation points for the following:

1. Not participating or cooperating during the daily activities. CHEWING GUM = DETENTION.

2. Putting your backpack in the wrong location, not running laps, and stretching improperly.

3. Wearing inappropriate or incorrectly tied shoes that fly off your feet.    **No Ugg Boots allowed**

4. Not sitting quietly on your number, taking equipment from the carts, or being tardy to class.

5. Ipods and cell phones may not be in your pockets; they must be placed in your backpacks

6. Note or no note; injured, sick or no shoes, you will be required to finish a writing assignment during class.

7. Leaving class at any time without permission or crossing the white line before the bell rings at the end of class.

GRADING

Grading is updated on a regular basis on Power School.  Make sure you know your user name and password to check grades on a daily basis.   All assignments can be located on schoolnotes.com

Daily Participation:                          80%.    Outside activities: games, sports, and activities.

Physical Education Studies:  20%    Inside activities:  Chapter worksheets and essays

TARDY POLICY

All students must be sitting on their numbers by the time the tardy bell rings or they are at risk of losing participation points.  When a student is tardy three times in one trimester, he/she will be given an automatic detention.  Each additional tardy will result in another detention.  The only exception to the tardy policy is when it is raining. In the case of rain the students will meet at the lunch benches, and wait for instructions from their teacher.

EXTRA CREDIT/MAKE-UP MILES

The only extra credit the P.E. Department will give is running a mile under 11 minutes (10 points).   Extra credit and make up miles may be held Tuesdays, directly after school by the soccer field.

ILLNESS OR INJURY

If you are at school and can’t participate in P.E. for a medical reason, you need to bring a dated note to excuse you from a parent/guardian.  If the illness/injury occurs at school before P.E. you must get a note prior to class from the school nurse.  If illness or injury is for longer than three days we ask for a doctors note stating what activities you can or can’t do, and for how long.  Please let your teachers know if you injure yourself during class time. If you have any medical problems that may be affected by physical education such as asthma, please bring in a doctors note and give a copy to the school nurse and your PE teacher.

DRESS

Requirements for dress in Physical Education reflect our concern as a department for you safety, freedom of movement and personal hygiene.  Time will be provided for those who would like to change clothes, but permission must be granted by the student’s teacher prior to leaving class to change. Rain or shine, in or out.  Always come prepared for physical activity - Monday thru Friday, even on classroom days!

  • Sturdy laced-up tennis shoes are mandatory.  Sandals, boots/Ugg’s, and heeled shoes of any kind are not acceptable.  Failure to wear the correct shoes properly tied (shoes must be worn in such a way that they do not come off during class activities) will result in the loss of your ten participation points for the day.
  • Dress in clothes that you can sit on the blacktop or grass and that can get wet during a drizzle or splattered while running on a damp surface.
  • Remove all jewelry that could interfere with activity or that could be a safety hazard:  large earrings or rings on every finger, etc.

FITNESS LAB RULES

These rules are for your safety and to keep the equipment in top working order.  ANY violation of these rules will result in a loss of participation points, a drop in the citizenship grade, and banishment from the fitness lab for the remainder of the school year.
