Latest News: Eagles CIF Hopes Dashed in the Desert Welcome to CIF Division V water polo
and the vast distances to travel that only a geography teacher can appreciate.
Due to the four-year success of the Ocean League (thanks mainly to El
Segundo’s appearance in the 2004, 2006 and 2007 Finals) the move up
from Division VI was the price paid for success. The season of 2007
was the clincher since the third place Ocean League representatives
(El Segundo) became the first water polo team to finish that low in
a league and then upset two higher seeds and make it back to the finals
for the second straight year. Beverly Hills and Santa Monica made it
to last year’s quarterfinals a new Division VII was created and the
South Bay league got the boot upstairs. The only problem was that of
the seven leagues and 41 teams all are way east of the 605 freeway and
four are east of the 15 in either San Bernardino or Riverside County.
The Division ends at the southern reaches of the Coachella Valley where
date shakes and a county fair whose main drawing card is camel races.
The closest body of water in the Desert Valley League is a highly saline
lake created by the huge overflow of the Colorado River in 1907. Yes
we were less than 30 miles from the Salton Sea; probably a paradise
for water polo players who cannot float, but topography can also be
misleading so back to the “desert wilds” later. (to read the full story, click here) |
