Question 2 4/30/09

Question 2

Have you ever found something that you knew was the right thing to do? Well scientist these days use certainty to figure all sorts of problems out. It is the main reason they know how to figure things out, I mean it would not be science if they were uncertain about their work. In the essay John M. Berry talks about the scientist and their work these days. He says that "Certainty gives strength. Certainty gives one something upon which to learn". I feel that this makes a lot of sense, because if people were not certain about their work, how would they know they are right or even on the right track of being right?
In the essay Berry uses tons of rhetorical strategies to convey scientists and the scientific work that the scientist do. One strategy he talks about is the scientist should alway except their work no matter, anything they believe or think must be thrown out of their minds and only focus on the good hard fact they find in the laboratory because numbers never lie and if the method to which to find out the things needed to find works, then why doubt it? Its your own method. That is why certainty is so important, "uncertainty is a weakness" according to Berry, because it makes the scientist doubt him or herself and when you doubt yourself all the confidence that you could have had is now gone.
Other strategies Berry uses is when he starts talking about the shovels, and also the difference between dynamite and picks. With the shovel idea, he says that you can pick up things that are hard and jagged but you can not break anything with it, for example, he says rocks. I mean yeah a shovel can pick up rock but why can't it break the rock? If it is strong enough to hold a lot of weight, then it should be able to break the rock. And with the dynamite and pick choice, I would say a pick for most jobs because it is a tool that can be used by hand and will not cause as much destruction as a stick of dynamite would. I mean do not get me wrong, if you plan to blow up a piece of a mountain, of course you are going to use the dynamite but if your just trying to break up rocks and scraps why not use the hand held pick? But to be certain that your ideas will be successful, you need to have faith in yourself. Some people can not become successful scientist because of their lack of confidence and lack of certainty in themselves.
In this essay the reader sees that the most important part of science and the scientific methods are that, a good scientist will not doubt himself with all the formulas and all the work put in to finding out the perfect meaning of where something comes from or how to find out all the mysteries the scientist have to find out these days. Scientist have to figure out new forms of doing things everyday of their lives, they basically live in the laboratories. But without them, what would we know? Thanks to the men and women scientist these days, we have been able to cure nasty diseases and figure out the best ways to live long and healthy lives.
