L0L (L zero L)

Everyone knows that LOL (Laughing Out Loud) has been misused and abused. People inaccurately use LOL when they really only mean that something is slightly humorous. LOL was originally intended to indicate that you are literally Laughing Out Loud. LOL, even if used accurately, still falls short of indicating intensity of laughter.

People are accepting a new standard called LØL that allows for the indication of laughter intensity, also including the complete absence of humor.

Instead of typing LOL, here are the new codes people are using:

L0 = Not funny at all
L1 = I smiled - traditional smile :)
L2 = I chuckled or nasal snorted
L3 = I laughed out loud - traditional LOL
L4 = I laughed pretty hard for more than just a few moments - traditional ROTFL - also, any L3 accompanied by clapping
L5 = No more, please, I can't stop the tears - can't catch breath (sightings include beverage spewing from nose, or wetting of pants)

You can add a + after a number to indicates intensity of laughter between those above. A loud chuckle that did not reach full laughter could rate an L2+, for example.

The name is simple. LØL is a recursive acronym for LØL's Not LOL, since the Ø is a circle slash, like on signs for no parking or no smoking, for example.

Note that LØL has yet to reach 100% acceptance, so you may have to instruct noobs. In the future, when someone types LOL, please refer them to the above codes so that they won't continue to embarrass themselves. Intelligent test groups successfully use LØL in everyday communication.
