Formative Assessment
It is imperative to continually assess student progress and understanding in order to inform and adapt your instruction when necessary. Throughout my internship I took annecdotal records each day. At the beginning of the year I assigned three students for each day. It was my responsibility to make sure I took annecdotal records on those three students for that day. I also found incredible value in circulating and questioning during group activities and work time. Short discussions with small groups of students provided a wealth of information to guide my instruction. Below are some pictures of different group activities I incorporated into my planning that facilitated small group discussion with students. During this math period students were broken into small groups to investigate the concept of number equation relationships.
During this social studies lesson students were broken up into small groups to learn about how First Nations People in Souther Saskatchewan hunted and used buffalo . Self EvaluationI strongly believe that in order for students to take accountability of their learning and behavior they have to be given the opportunity to set their own goals and assess their progress. In Physical Education I provided students with the opportunity to set behavioral goals at the beginning of each new unit. At the end of the unit students were challenged to evaluate how they had done in reference to their initial goals. A copy of the goal worksheet given to students is provided in the "attachments" section at the bottom of this page. Students were also provided with the opportunity to assess their participation and effort everyday with the "Reaching for the Stars" program. This program is based on Don Hellison's work and required students to place their star on the star board after each Physical Education lesson. At the end of each lesson I would review the board and take students aside to discuss their ranking if I felt they needed further guidance in self evaluation. Below is an photograph of the star board created for this purpose. |
