What is CERT?
The Erie County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a group of citizens who live or work in Erie County that assist as a local resource in events such as disaster response, search and rescue or mass community vaccination distribution. Some members of Erie County CERT have medical backgrounds including professional licensure as nurses or emergency medical technicians. However, the majority of our membership is comprised of community members without prior specialized medical or emergency response training. We accept everyone to become members of Erie County CERT. All members of the team receive specialized training that allows them to be used as an asset to the community in times of need.
What do we do?
Erie County CERT can be used in a variety of capacities. The members of the team are initially trained on the basic concepts of disaster operations, safety, and response. Following initial training, team members can choose to participate in monthly training sessions to further develop their knowledge of the community and response techniques.
Once members have completed initial training they can be asked to respond if the community is affected by events such as tornado response, flood clean-up, or sheltering operation assistance. Additional activities might include assisting during emergency drills to prepare for response or train on specialized activities such as point of distribution. Members are also encouraged to participate in recruitment activities throughout the area or local events to help increase community presence and raise awareness of Erie County CERT.
