Eric Fuertes MFA Candidate Sculpture The underpinning of my work is a revelation between the inner cynic and realist. Personal narratives of a restless mind become visual testimonials that carry truth, with a satirical undertone. These sculptures are a diversification of instinct and impulse that allude to stories dealing with inner cravings and the instability of a constantly fluctuating psyche. I believe there is a certain purity found within “the crude” of the mind and ideas that are deemed taboo through breath can sometimes be manipulated sculpturally to lessen the blow. Artistically, Henry Darger and Trenton Doyle Hancock have intrigued my interest in their ability to translate the mind’s eye into the visually tangible. From “fabricated to found” my sculptural imagery is a narrative of frozen emotional glimpses and daily struggles of what seems to be an unedited stream of consciousness It is within these works, social commentaries with humorous connotations, that a story unfolds which reflects on one’s place in society referencing the literal and the figurative. The constant futility of finding oneself allows for mental revelations to be better understood and thus they unfold sculpturally.
