Human Rights in the Border Region

  • Anastasio's mother goes to D.C. This past Mother's Day, Doña Luz, the mother of Anastasio Hernandez Rojas went to Washington, D.C. to seek justice for the brutal killing of her son by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (of which Border Patrol is a part) nearly two years ago.  "What do you call a mother whose child has been taken from her? There is no name for that pain," grieved Doña Luz.  Equality Alliance's executive director, Andrea Guerrero, accompanied Doña Luz and Anastasio's younger brother, Bernardo, to D.C. where they were joined by allies from the Southern Border Communities Coalition and other advocates. Career & College Preparedness for All

  • What Parents Have to Say Over the last year, the Equality Alliance has been talking to hundreds of San Diego Unified elementary and middle school parents about the dreams they have for their children. In conversations with parents, we've learned that all parents, regardless of background and circumstance, want their children to be prepared for a changing world.   In curbside conversations before and after school, we are sharing information with parents about the fastest growing jobs and what it takes for students to graduate high school prepared for college and career. In turn, parents are sharing their ideas about how to improve the learning environment and student achievement at their particular schools.  This summer we will report on what we've learned so far ...

Fair-Share Tax & Fiscal Policies

  • Equality Alliance Backs Tax on Top 1% This fall, the Equality Alliance will be working with its allies in the California Calls network to help pass the "1% Tax", the compromise tax measure negotiated by the Governor and the Millionaire's Tax team.  The new tax measure would increase the income tax on those earning over $500,000 by 1% and those earning over $1 million by 3% for seven years. It would also add a quarter-cent to the state sales tax for four years. The revenue generated from the measure would go a long way to closing the state budget gap and would raise $7-9 billion for education and essential social services.  We believe that everyone should pay their fair share to help get ...
