Justice for our Neighbors JFON provides free, professional legal services to immigrants in monthly clinics. This UMCOR program connects a national network of church-based, volunteer-led immigration clinics to asylum seekers and immigrants who need a helping hand to navigate the maze of rules and laws that affect their lives in the United States. Action Update: DREAM Act and Reuniting Families Act Thank you for participating in our call-in days for immigration legislation over the last two months. The DREAM Act now has 87 cosponsors in the House (HR 1751) and 23 cosponsors in the Senate (S729).
The Reuniting Families Act now has 66 cosponsors in the House (HR 2709) and 3 in the Senate (S1085). Events · NETWORK, A National Catholic Social Justice Lobby, just completed an interactive briefing on Capitol Hill where bipartisan staff members participated in a contemplative session on immigration. In the session, staff members assumed the identity of a person in the immigration debate (ex. Border patrol, undocumented immigrant, Minuteman). Congressional staffers had the chance to discuss and reflect on how their work could be changed by hearing different perspectives on the issue. 5. Policy Updates · On Thursday, Senator Menendez (D-NJ) and Senator Gillibrand (D-NY) introduced legislation calling for reforms to the nation's immigrant detention system. · Several immigration enforcement measures emerged in the Senate during the appropriations process for the Department of Homeland Security. For more details, see here. · The Obama administration announced a review and expansion of the 287g program which deputizes local authorities to enforce immigration law. · Thanks to the Hatch amendment which passed by a voice vote in the DHS appropriations bill, legislation is moving forward to protect widows and orphans of deceased U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents who are in the family immigration system. 6.
