·         Today’s Meeting

o        Overview of events

o        Speakers from the Sierra Club Mrs. Evelyn Merz (President of Houston Chapter) and Ron Hayden

o        Pre-sale of t-shirts ($15)  &  collection of dues  (They are $5 for the school year, and you get a cool sticker)

·        October Events

o       Arboretum Trail Work Ike Relief 8-11 am

§         The arboretum has a high need for volunteers due to the damage they encountered with Ike. You will be helping to clean-up debris and help the arboretum get back on track. Regarding what to wear, they require closed-toe/heel shoes and suggest long pants instead of shorts. Please read through the "Info for Volunteers" link on the site. Arboretum is located at: 4501 Woodway Drive  (close to Galleria)

o       OA Farmer’s Markets Bike Ride 8-1pm (Meet at Rec Center)

§         Participate in a bike ride with Outdoor Adventure and visit three local Farmer’s Markets in Houston. Cost is $5 for students.  No experience is required and bikes and helmets are provided free of charge.

o       Bioneers Conference 17th-19th

§         We will probably be volunteering at the conference. Things are still not definite, but you will receive more information via email. If we don’t volunteer, you can always check out the site and attend on your own. It is a very informative and active conference.

§         “The Texas Bioneers Conference brings together brilliant corporate, scientific, and social innovators focused on practical and visionary solutions for developing sustainable organizations, reducing our ecological footprint, and healing our human communities. We connect ideas, issues, people and networks in a movement that is at once local, national, and global.” http://www.blackwoodland.org/bioneers/index.htm

o       ArBOOretum Saturday October 18th (tentative due to Ike)

§         Help the Houston Arboretum with the annual Halloween celebration for children. Face painting, trick or treating, etc.. Due to the damage the HA encountered with Ike this event is tentative; more information will be sent via email.

o       “Manufactured Landscapes” Movie Screening 6- 7:30pm in Caribbean Rm.

§          We will be screening this award winning documentary. We recommend watching the trailer so you know what to expect of this incredibly documentary ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jv23xwe0BoU ). Director Jennifer Baichwal followed Edward Burtynsky on a tour of Asia as he took large-scale photographs of giant industrial landscapes around the world. The film explores Burtynksy's work through interviews in the field and in the studio, detailed images of his photographs, and live filming of his subject matter.

o       UH Sustainability Day October 24th 9-1 pm Lynn Eusian Park

§         Our school’s administration is taking huge steps to improve our school environmental impact. Among a number of things, they have order a large quantity of custom made recycling bins with goals of having a recycling bin next to every trash can, they have formed a taskforce and they want to kick it all off with a Green Day at UH. Our club’s members will be in charge of leading the clean-up effort around campus. Then, we will plant trees on campus, have a picnic with Dr. Khator in attendance, and there will be a Farmer’s Market on campus! This event will have a huge impact on our school’s eco-friendliness and the Environmental Club is at the forefront of this event. We need all of you to help and volunteer.

o       Adopt-a-Block October 26th from 2-3pm

§         We have adopted a beautiful block close to school (Elgin and Dowling). We will be helping to clean up the area. Emancipation Park 3018 Dowling St.
