Course Description

The goal for English Language Arts 12 is to refine, apply, and extend the solid foundation of knowledge, skills, and strategies developed in English Language Arts 9 through 11. Using the lens of leadership skills, English Language Arts 12 students will develop a world perspective by analyzing classic and contemporary texts in a variety of genre. Twelfth graders will synthesize information, ideas, and themes to understand the past, the present, and to think innovatively about the future. They will identify and apply their own leadership skills and prepare for responsible action as American citizens in the context of a global world.

Required Writing and Unit Assessments (Senior Projects) take place within each quarter as follows:


First Quarter
 
College Application Essay / Personal Statement
 
Speaking Project 

Who are you and where are you going?  This project is based on the Personal Statement / College Application Essay.

Format may be selected from: speech, video, vidcast, song, poetry recitation, interview


Second Quarter
 
Persuasive Essay
Reflective Essay
 
Comparative Analysis
Select a leader who is similar to the character you selected from your Reflective Essay Assignment. Highlight the similarities between this real life leader and the leader in your essay.

Third Quarter
 
Research Paper
 
Visual Presentation (Public Service Announcement)

Written & Spoken Commencement Address 
 
A commencement speech selected by instructor, will be viewed by students. After viewing, students will complete the four close and critical reading questions:

  • What does the text say? (literal)
  • How does it say it? (figurative)
  • What does it mean? (interpretive)
  • Why does it matter? (wisdom/allusion.connections/relevance)

Students will then draft and deliver their own commencement speeches.
