Schools is used because it is modifying the school.

Good replaced by well because it is modifying adjectives

Who replaces which because it is used for better

2. It is customary for everyone to rise when singing the Star-Spangled Banner, our national anthem.

It is customary for everyone to raise when the star spangled banner our national anthem is sang.

 Rise replaces raise because you raise your hand but rise when standing up

Raise is a transitive verb taking a DO      Rise takes an IO intransitive verb

Subject is doing the action so dont need DO  People are rising.

People raise flags

Star Spangled Banner capitalized because it is a proper noun.

We want to get rid of sang and make it an active verb singing

Comma after banner and anthem because it is an apositive

3. Most students completed their book reports on "Ivanhoe", long before professor Parker collected them.

No subject in relative clause so change to who.

Two commas, one after Sue and one after president, because it is the relative clause

Fewer replaces less because less is not countable and mistakes are countable.

-Comma added after Othello and love (Which is a relative pronoun)to explain what the Othello is.

-She and is is changed to they and are to make it plural.

3 Last night, Mom told me and my sister to clean our rooms because she had invited a friend over who was visiting us for the first time.

Last night mom told me and my sister to clean our rooms because she had invited a friend over whom was visiting us for the first time.

 Do not change me and my siser because We need direct object not a subject pronoun.

Mom capitalized.

Comma after last night because it is an adverbal modifier

 Who was visiting us for the first time? the friend!! This is the relative clause

If there is a relative clause, you use who!!

4 Sara and I met Sally and Sue at the mall to buy  videos for a friend's birthday, who liked action packed films.

Sara and myself met Sally and Sue at the mall because she wanted to buy videos for a friends birthday whom liked action packed films.

 Myself changed to I because it is a subject pronoun. Reflexive pronoun is myself.

Because she wanted is omitted because it makes the sentence unclear on who wants to buy videos

Whom is changed to who because there is a subject of the relaitve clause.

Comma after birthday to provide a pause.

Friends has appos. for owning something.

5 Between you and me, Coach said that Sally will start against Costa because she has recently out-played Sue, to whom she lives next door.

Among you and I coach said that Sally will start against Costa because she has recently out played Sue whom she lives next door to.

 Quotes put up because somebody is speaking to somebody else.

Whom changed to Who because there is no subject in the relative clause.

Among is changed to between because between is for two people, not among people.

Words that show position are preposition. Take objects. I is the object of the preposition. PREPOSITIONS TAKE OBJECTS

To is put in front of wh

Relative clause is the Who and Whom, She is the subject because it is a noun


Week 1

1. That picture has not been hung properly and it will have to be taken down and corrected

That picture has not been hanged proper and it will have to be took down and did correct.

 -Hung is the correct past tense of to hang, not hanged.

-   -ly must be added to proper to make it an adverb.

-Taken is correct past tense of to take, not took down

Principal parts include present, past, perfect.   Take, Took, Will take. Perfects: Will have, have/has, had.

I will have taken the test tommorow, She has taken the test. He had taken the test yesterday.

-Corrected actually makes sense, I don't understand what did correct means.

-an effect is the result of an affect.

- An was changed to a because an is used on vowels and a is used on consonants.

- been changed to had in order to make the verb present perfect.

-classes changed to class becuase we are only talking about one class... It does not have to follow students to become classes.

 

 

3. Neither my friend nor his sister have the time to address these envelopes; maybe the other members can help?

 - Nor is used instead of or when you are refering to two people not being able to do the same thing. Semicolon used to connect two good sentences, as well as period, "comma and,yet,but, etc."    After period 2 dashes down.

-Here was eliminated because it is an unnecesary word.

- An 'e' was added to envelops because it is spelled envelope.

- A period was added to make the sentence clearer.

- Second sentence is a question is why a question mark was added to the end of the sentence.

 

4. My friend said that I should lie down for a while before I participate in the track meet; Otherwise I won't be in top shape.

My friend said I should lay down for awhile before I participate in the track meet other wise Ill not be top shape.

 Verbs that take direct object are called transitive verbs.

Intransitive verbs are verbs that do not take direct object verbs.

-Lay is turned to lie because lie is the correct transitive verb.

- Awhile is correctly spelled a while.

-Two complete sentences divided by semi colon.

-Won't is the correction combination of will not.

-That is added to add clarification to sentence.

- Otherwise should be connected

 

5. Tom and I will be helping Bill, who is the worst student in trigonometry, by copying all of my notes for him.

               Tom and myself will be helping Bill that is the badest student in trigonometry and I will                    copy all of my own notes for him so he can help me help him.
        -Myself changed to I because myself is reflexive.
