FIT Sheets

Purpose
  • FIT (Fact • Interpretation • Tie In) is a student-centered exercise to improve reading and writing skills.
  • This method was developed by Dr. James Nicholl at Western Carolina University in June of 1992 as an approach to critical thinking.
  • The goal of the FIT sheet is to offer three different written perspectives on assigned readings.
  • Carefully filling out a FIT sheet can help you develop and sharpen reading and writing skills.
Instructions
  • For reading assignments indicated on the calendar, your are required to turn in a FIT sheet, each of which has three sections:
    1. F [fact]: You are to find a FACT (a quotation no longer than a sentence or two) from the reading that presents a new idea to you. You must write out the quotation and then explain in your written response how it changes your understanding. What does it make you realize that you did not realize before?
    2. I [interpretation]: For the second part of the FIT sheet, you must choose a second quotation, one that is different from the first one, and offer an intelligent INTERPRETATION. After you write out the quotation this time, explain what is implied in the author’s words and why this idea is important. No paraphrasing.
    3. T [tie in]: Finally, you choose a third quotation and TIE IT IN to your personal experience. After writing out the quotation, tell a detailed story that shows how the fact ties in with your life. Instead of giving a general impression of your experience focus on a specific time that illustrates your connection with the statement.
  • Please be aware that it is not acceptable to choose the entire essay, a page or pages, or a whole paragraph as a quotation. The more you narrow your focus, the more effective responses will be.
Scoring
  • For each section of the FIT sheet, your response will be accepted (1 pt), partially accepted (1/2 pt) or judged unacceptable (0 pt).
  • If your FIT sheet has at least one acceptable answer earning 1 full point, it will also earn a extra point merely for being turned in.
  • Therefore, each required FIT sheet can earn up to 4 points.
  • To earn full credit, your three quotes must be unique and carefully chosen, your responses must be professional and edited carefully, and all parts of the quote sheet must be filled in, including (a) the name of the reading assignment at the top, (b) the page numbers of your quotes, and (c) your name at the bottom.
  • If a FIT sheet is filled out improperly or written in an unprofessional manner, no extra point will be given. FIT sheets are collected at the beginning of class on the days indicated on the calendar. Please use the FIT sheet template to type your work. Open it in Microsoft Word and save it with your own file name. If you do not personally have Microsoft word, please use the school computers or log on to the network using Virtual Lab. Do not change the font type or size, the spacing, or the margins. Further instructions can be found on the template itself.
  • When you are done typing this assignment, be sure that it fills up and all fits on one page, even the bottom line with your name. FIT sheets shorter or longer than one page will not receive the extra point.
