Major Essays

Purpose
  • To learn the skill of persuasion: reaching consensus with an audience.
  • To learn writing skills that will make you impressive on the job.
  • To show that you are managing the writing process effectively.
  • Outline: To map out ideas and design ALL the parts of an essay.
  • Rough Draft: To compose the argument and fix mistakes before the final draft.
Out-of-Class Essays
  • For each out-of-class essay, use one of your Topic Picks.
  • For each essay, you should compose a detailed outline and write a rough draft.
  • The final draft of these essays must carefully adhere to MLA presentation guidelines.
  • Each essay must be grammatically polished and exemplify careful argumentative development.
  • At least 3 pages typed, double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman, 1" margins all around.
  • This length requirement is the equivalent of 70 lines of text, not counting your heading or title.
  • Final draft must be submitted through e-Learning as a Microsoft Word file attachment.
Practice Regents' Essay
  • Like the real Regents' exam, you will choose one of four topics that I give you.
  • You will have 60 minutes to complete the essay from start to finish.
  • The practice essay will look like the real Regents' Essay Test: click here to see.
  • You can use this sample Regents' Essay exam to prepare for your in-class performance.
  • There is space under the topics to write notes and organize your thoughts.
  • But you have limited space to write the essay itself: 3 lined pages. No extra paper is allowed.
  • You can skip lines as you go, especially if your handwriting is small.
  • If you think you will run out of space, switch back to single spacing your lines.
  • The four topic choices will come from this huge list of approved Regents' topics.

Research Project Proposal (click here for instructions)
  • The final draft of this proposal must carefully adhere to MLA presentation guidelines.
  • Your proposal must be grammatically polished and follow all of the assignment guidelines.
  • At least 2 pages typed, double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman, 1" margins all around.
  • This length requirement is the equivalent of 50 lines of text, not counting your heading or title.
  • Final draft must be submitted through e-Learning as a Microsoft Word file attachment.
