How to try Skater Hockey?

The club runs two sessions each week at Northumberland Park Community School, Sport Block (entrance behind Tottenham FC stadium on Worchester Rd/Paxton Road), Tottenham, London N17 0PG (Map):

Youth/Juniors sessions (11-17 yrs olds)

The club runs weekly 'Come & Try' skater hockey sessions every Thursday's from 6.30 - 8.00 PM for under 18's. Beginners and experianced skaters are welcome. The club has coaches who can teach you to skate and we can loan skates and equipment to have a go. If you can already skate, great, come along and combine your skating skills with Hockey. The first four sessons are free for under 18's. If you are a Junior player and want to get more hockey practice, you are welcome to train with the Seniors as Juniors can play up. Please note the senior sessions are not free and will have to pay subs. See below for Senior training times and fees.

Senior sessions (Over 18s)

The Seniors training sessions are every Tuesday's from 8.00 - 9.30 PM. Beginners and experianced skaters are welcome. The first session is free for new players. You must bring your own skates and equipment, although we may be able to lend you some equipment such as sticks during the training session.

What equipment will I need?

Protective equipment should be worn to limit any personal injury. All players must wear a helmet whilst participating in the sessions. Equipment includes:

Helmet (with full visor or face cage for under 18's): Cage must not allow blade or shaft of a stick through it. Chin straps must not be more than two inches from the chin and must be secure. Glasses if worn must have plastic lenses and frames. Glasses must be strapped to the back of the head.
Neck Guard (under 18's): Prevent sticks cutting the exposed neck.
Body Armour (shoulder pads): Protects the shoulders, upper arm, chest and back.
Padded Shorts: Must have good kidney and spine protection.
Elbow Pads: Must protect the joint and the lower arm and be able to be secured in postition.
Padded Gloves: Protect the hand and wrist.
Groin Protection: All players must wear one - girls included.
Leg Guards: Must be a one piece to cover knee and shin.
Stick: Sticks must be to approved standard and not badly worn or have a rough edge. Sticks must have a manufactered butt end - preferably of a rounded design for ease of handling.
Skates: Skates can be quad or Inline. No missing wheels, no protruding screws or anything that would damage a hall floor or injure a player. Sharp grinding plates are not permitted.

Note: Visors, neck guard and body armour are optional for senior players.

Other useful equipment:

Water bottle: Players should have their own water bottle, clearly marked with their name. It is not advisable to share water bottles as this may spread infections. Big bicycle types that can be squirted through a visor are good.
Kit bag: Big and battered. Long straps to go over you shoulder. Good strong zip.
Socks: Anti-blister socks can help when breaking in new boots. Or wear two pairs of thin socks.
Skate tightener: A metal hook and handle that helps get the skates really tight.
Packing tape: Great for securing knee pads and socks. velcro straps are a re-cycle able alternative. (Remember to dispose of old tape in the changing room bin!)
Spare laces:
Allen keys:
Use two to keep skate wheels tight.
Screwdriver: For keeping the helmet screws tight.
Plastic carrier bag: For all the smelly wet stuff.
Ball:
Regulation ball for real practice.
Training shirt: Tough ice hockey shirt - leave the team shirt for games.

The equipment must be manufactered to the regulated standards of Skater Hockey. See the game rules document on the club document page for more info.

No watches, chains, earrings, rings or any jewellery to be worn. If body piercing cannot be removed, then it must be adequately taped over. Players must not chew gum or sweets during sessions or matches.

The club has a limited number of skates and equipment which we can lend out during the training sessions to get you started. If you decide to buy your own kit later on but not sure where to buy it from, we have a list of hockey shops that supply everything you willl need to play on our external link page.
