Revelation 19:1
“And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God:”
Revelation 19:1
“And after these things”
- This phrase refers to the events described in Revelation chapters 17 and 18
- This phrase refers to the judgment of Babylon described in Rev. 17:16,17; 18:4-23)
- This singing described in heaven begins after Babylon (Papal Rome) has been destroyed and just prior to the 2nd Coming
- This rejoicing begins after the plagues have begun but prior to the 7th plague (2nd Coming)
“heard a great voice of much people in heaven,”
- This represents the heavenly hosts
- This is in response to the call to rejoice (Rev. 18:20)
“saying, Alleluia;”
- Greek “allelouia” taken from the Hebrew “halelu-Yah”
- Hebrew “halal” means to praise; “Yah” means Jehovah
- Alleluia means: “praise ye Jehovah”
- In the New Testament this word is only seen in Rev. 19:1,3,4,6
- Revelation 19:1-7 is an antiphonal choral arrangement (2 anthems and 2 responses):
- First the heavenly hosts (vs. 1-3) then the beasts and elders respond (vs. 4)
- Next the voice from the throne (vs. 5) then the entire universe responds (vs. 6,7)
“Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God:”
- “salvation” literally “the salvation” meaning the sum total or fullness of salvation
- This “salvation” has come since probation has closed and God’s people are saved but not yet collected from Earth
- Babylon has been destroyed/ the plagues are falling
- Glory is given to God for judging Babylon and saving His people
“Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God:”
- “honour” is given to God for saving mankind, also mankind (God’s people) will shortly be able to glorify God and honor Him
- “power” this refers to the power over the earth that God is about to take back from Satan
Revelation 19:2
“For true and righteous are his judgments: for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand.”
Revelation 19:2
“for”
- Now the reason why God is praised will be given
“true”
- True here means “genuine, real, or dependable”
- God is dependable and real and His judgments are also
“righteous”
- Can be translated “just”
- God is just and right and so are His judgments
- God makes no error in His acts of judgment
“judgments”
- Greek “krisis” meaning “the act of judgment” or the execution of judgment as opposed to the verdict of judgment (see Rev. 17:1)
- This refers especially to the 7 last plagues and the judgment of Babylon
“hath judged”
- Greek suggests a single completed act
“the great whore”
- This is referring to Babylon (see Rev. 17:1,5)
- Babylon is the mother of harlots (Rev. 17:5) who were the source of other false religions
“which did corrupt the earth”
- Babylon deceived the world
“with her fornication”
- Greek “porneuo” which is the verb form of “porne” (whore) and literally means “gone a whoring”
- This represents an illicit alliance of Christians with some other master other than Christ
- This refers to Babylon’s alliance with the world’s nations to enforce religion (a religious-political alliance)
“and hath avenged”
- This phrase suggests that God has already avenged His people in part
- This is consistent with the context: Rev. 18 describes the act of judgment on Babylon referred to in this verse, then Rev. 19 describes a celebration in heaven, then Rev. 19 describes the 2nd Coming suggesting three events occurring in order
- This is also consistent with the concept that Babylon (Papal Rome) will receive her reward or judgment prior to the rest of Babylon (her followers across the world)
- Note: Babylon (the city of Papal Rome) receives her punishment by The 8th king and his 10 kings (Rev. 17:16-18) while the rest of Babylon will receive their punishment as part of the 7th plague (2nd Coming) (Rev.16:19,20)
“the blood of his servants at her hand”
- This clearly ties to Babylon (Rev. 17:6; 18:24)
- Babylon had killed many of God’s people in the last days and this is a fulfillment of God’s promise in the 5th seal (Rev. 6:9,10,11) to avenge His people
Revelation 19:3
And again they said, Alleluia. And her smoke rose up for ever and ever.
Revelation 19:3
“Alleluia”
- Means “praise ye Jehovah” (see Rev.19:1,4,6)
“her smoke rose up”
- This refers to the destruction of Babylon described in Rev. 17:16 and Rev. 18:8,9
- This verse suggests that Babylon has been destroyed prior to this celebration
“for ever and ever.”
- This phrase means that Babylon was destroyed permanently and for all eternity
- This phrase does not mean that Babylon will burn forever but that Babylon will never exist again
- The Greek phrase means burned for a certain period until completely destroyed (see Rev.14:11)
Revelation 19:4
And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia.
Revelation 19:4
“the four and twenty elders”
- These are the 24 elders involved in the investigative judgment in heaven (Rev. 4:4 compare Dan. 7:10,26)
- These are seen in the throne room
“the four beasts
- These are the 4 creatures involved in the investigative judgment (Rev. 4:6-8)
- These are seen in the throne room
“fell down and worshipped God”
- These elders and creatures are described as falling down and worshipping God (see Rev. 4:10; 5:14)
“that sat on the throne”
- This clearly is occurring in God’s throne room
“saying, Amen; Alleluia.”
- Amen means verily or true
- Alleluia: third time word used in Rev. 19
Revelation 19:5
And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great.
Revelation 19:5
“a voice came out of the throne”
- This is either God’s voice or someone speaking for God
“Praise our God,”
- Literally, “keep on praising”

“both small and great.”
- Same group referred to in the 7th trumpet (Rev. 11:18)
Revelation 19:6
And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.
Revelation 19:6
“the voice of a great multitude”
- John now hears the sound of another great multitude
- This “great multitude” may be the same as the “great multitude” of Rev. 19:1 described as “in heaven” (Rev. 19:1) however, this group seems to be larger based on its sounding like mighty thunder
- Some suggest that the first group is the heavenly multitude and the second multitude represents the entire universe responding
- These verses parallel Hosea 2:19-21
“as the voice of many waters”
- This group sounds like many waters, which is what Jesus’ voice sounds like (Rev. 1:15) and also what the 144,000 will sound like (Rev. 14:2,3)
“and as the voice of mighty thunderings”
- Mighty thundering suggests a larger group
“Alleluia:”
- “Praise ye Jehovah”
- “the Lord God omnipotent”
- The Lord God almighty (II Cor. 6:18, Rev. 1:8)
“reigneth.”
- Literally, “reigned” in the sense of “began to reign”
- God began to reign over His people at the close of probation (see Rev. 12:10)
- God takes over His kingdom when Satan is cast down at the close of probation when the investigative judgment ends
- God is here described as already reigning prior to the 2nd Coming described in later verses
Revelation 19:7
Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.
Revelation 19:7
“Let us be glad and rejoice,”
- “be glad” – inward experience of the heart
- “rejoice” – outward experience of gladness
“give honour to him”
- Literally “give glory” to God
“the marriage of the Lamb is come”
- This marriage scene occurs after the accuser is cast down (Rev. 12:10) and represents the “kingdom of our God” having “come” (Rev. 12:10)
- This is when Jesus “authority” has “come” since His kingdom is complete (investigative judgment is ended, probation has closed)
- This marriage scene occurs after the accuser is cast down (Rev. 12:10)
- This is when “salvation” has come (Rev.12:10)
- This is when God’s “power” has come since He can now repay the wicked for their sins (Rev. 12:10): this repayment begins with the plagues (described in Revelation chapter 16) and also involves the judgment of Babylon (described in Revelation chapters 17 and 18)
- Jesus is now going to symbolically accept His bride
- Jesus’ bride is the New Jerusalem (Rev. 21:2)
- The New Jerusalem is the capital city of the New Earth
- The New Jerusalem is the home of the redeemed
- The New Jerusalem symbolizes God’s new universe and also His saved people
- This marriage scene parallels the betrothal process of old, which was followed later by the bridegroom going to collect His bride and bring her home
- Once betrothed the bride was already considered as belonging to the Bridegroom
- God’s people are His once probation closes even though He has not yet come for them
- In this symbol of marriage in Revelation 19 God’s people are the wedding guests (see Matt. 25:1-10) who are waiting for the Bridegroom to come, however, in the Old Testament God’s people are often described as His bride and both applications apply
“the Lamb”
- Jesus is the Lamb Slain (Rev. 5:6)
“is come”
- Meaning “has finally come”
- Heaven has been waiting for God to complete His work and end the sin problem
- Heaven has been waiting for God to pour out His judgments
- Heaven has been waiting for God to avenge His people
- Heaven has been waiting for God to bring His people home
“his wife hath made herself ready.”
- This refers to the ancient wedding ceremony where the bride prepared herself for the coming of the groom
- Applied to the New Jerusalem: God has prepared an entire new city for His throne and His people
- Applied to God’s people: God has prepared His church on earth to receive His Son at the 2nd Coming
Revelation 19:8
And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.
Revelation 19:8
“And to her was granted”
- “Her” refers to the bride”:
- The bride is the city New Jerusalem which represents God’s kingdom (G.C. p.426) which is God’s people
“was granted”
- Past tense since has already been done (probation is closed)
- God’s people (His kingdom) have already been identified
“arrayed in fine linen”

“clean and white”
- Clean: literally “gorgeous” or “bright”
- White: literally “pure”

- These deeds were done through the indwelling of the Spirit
Revelation 19:9
And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.
Revelation 19:9
“he saith unto me, Write,”
- The angel (see Rev. 19:10) now tells John to record a blessing on those who are called to this marriage supper
“Blessed are they which are called”
- Blessed : “happy” are they (see Matt. 5:3-11)
- One of 7 beatitudes in the book of Revelation

- At the time of the end God’s people will reject the false Christ and his testimonies and miracles
“worship God”
- John is told to only worship God
- At the end of time the world will worship an angel (Satan as the false Christ)
“for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”
- Prophecy: this is one of the gifts of the Spirit (I Cor.12:10; Eph. 4:11)
- The Spirit was sent to bear testimony to Jesus ( John 15:26)
- Jesus testimony is given through the Spirit and is especially recorded in the book of Revelation as a prophecy for the last days (Rev. 1:2,3)
- In the last days God’s people will have the gift of prophecy manifested
- In the last days God’s people will “understand” the final events and warn the world (Dan. 11:33; 12:10)
Revelation 19:11
And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.
Revelation 19:11
“heaven opened”
- Literally: “standing open”
- John is looking into heaven
- John is about to see Jesus empty heaven and take His army to earth to save His people
- When Jesus leaves heaven there will be “silence in heaven” (Rev. 8:1) but not on earth! (Rev. 16:18,19: earthquake, hail, etc.)
“behold, a white horse!”
- Behold: used to point out something important
- White: a symbol of purity or holiness of character (Rev. 3:4; 7:14)
- Horse: a symbol of warfare or battle (Exodus 15:21; Isa. 43:17)
- Thus this suggests a holy war or battle
- Jesus is seen as going to forth to holy battle

- This new name represents a new task that Jesus has not had before, a “strange” work (Isa. 28:21)
- This new name relates to His job as Avenger of His people

Revelation 19:13
“clothed with a vesture”
- Greek “himation” meaning a riders coat or military commander’s cloak
“dipped in blood:”
- Jesus coat is here pictured as covered in blood
- This can represent the blood of the wicked who are about to die (see Isa. 63:1-6)---most consistent with context
- This could also refer to His own blood shed for our sins --- however, He is usually described as a Lamb Slain for this and here is described as a conquering Commander
“his name is called The Word of God.”
- Jesus is described with four names in this battle description:
- Faithful and True
- Name that no man Knew (Avenger)
- Word of God
- King of Kings and Lord of Lords
- Jesus is the Word (John 1:1-3,14) demonstrating God’s love for mankind

“And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword”
- Jesus mouth spoke and we were created (Psalms 33:6,9)
- Jesus mouth will speak and the wicked will be destroyed
- The sword represents the power of His words
- Greek “rhomphaia”: the sword described here is a sword of assault not of protection (see Rev. 1:16)
“he should smite the nations:”
- Smite: literally “smite once and for all”
- The nations: these are the same nations who drank the wine of Babylon (Rev. 14:8)
“he shall rule them”
- Rule: Greek “poimaino” means “to shepherd”
- Jesus will now rule over the wicked and break them to “pieces” (Rev. 2:26,27)
- The false Christ was ruling the world but now Jesus will take it back
“with a rod of iron”
- The shepherd’s rod had a crook on one end to guide the sheep and rescue them and a heavy metal cap or ring on the other end to kill wild animals that attacked the sheep
- This “rod of iron” refers to the end of the rod used to kill with
- This rod will be used to destroy the wicked (see Psalms 2:9; 110:1,2,5,6; Rev. 2:26,27)
“he treadeth the winepress”
- Winepress: used to squeeze grapes
- The grape harvest represents the harvest of the wicked (Rev. 14:18-20;Joel 3:12-14)
- Wine represents blood
“of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.”
- This is the winepress of God’s wrath which will destroy the wicked
- The wrath of God involves the 7 last plagues (Rev. 15:1; 16:1) and ends with the 7th which is the 2nd Coming described here as the winepress
Revelation 19:16

- This is the same description applied to Jesus in Revelation 17:14 where He is seen as victorious over Satan (8th king) and the 10 kings at the 2nd Coming
Revelation 19:17
And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;
Revelation 19:17
“And I saw an angel standing in the sun”
- This describes an angel standing next to Christ (the sun)
- The sun is often used to describe Jesus: the sun here represents Jesus’ majesty and brilliance as our conquering Savior (glorious appearing II Thess. 2:8)
- The sun is also used elsewhere to represent Jesus as the source of light, life, and power
“loud voice”
- A loud voice usually means judgment (Rev.14:7; 14:9; 16:1)
“saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven,”
- This appears to parallel Ezekiel 39:17-20 and Jeremiah 7:32,33 where there is described a destruction of the wicked (note: both of these battles are centered in Israel as it will be in the last days)
- The fowl are being invited to the final destruction of the wicked
“Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;”
- This is the other “supper” of Revelation 19
- You can be a guest at the marriage supper of the Lamb (Rev. 19:9) or you can be the entrée at the great supper of God!
Revelation 19:18
That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.
Revelation 19:18
“That ye may eat the flesh”
- Flesh: literally “flesh pieces”
“of kings”
- These are the kings that Satan will lead at the end of time (Rev. 16:14; 17:12)
“flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men,”
- These are the military leaders and mighty men under Satan’s control
“the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them,”
- Here the horses represent the forces of evil and its means of warfare
- Those that sit on them represent the men who fight for Satan
“flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.”
- This represents all of the wicked who will perish
Revelation 19:19
And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.
Revelation 19:19
“And I saw the beast,”
- This beast can refer to either the leopard-like beast (Rev.13:2) or to the scarlet beast (Rev. 17:3,8,11) or to both:
- The leopard-like beast is the Papacy
- The scarlet beast is Satan as the 8th king (Rev. 17:11) who will be reigning over the Papacy at the end of time
- Probably the beast here is best thought of as Satan and the Papacy
“and the kings of the earth”
- These are the kings of the earth who will support Satan at the end (Rev. 16:14; 17:12-14)
“and their armies”
- These are the world’s armies who will support Satan at the time of the end
“gathered together”
- This refers to the gathering of these armies at the end of time (Rev. 16:14,16: Joel 3:2,11)
“to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.”
- War: literally “the war”
- This is the final battle prior to the millennium of Revelation chapter20
- This is the “day of the Lord” (Joel 2:11)
- This is the end of the battle of “the great day of God the Almighty” (Rev. 16:14)
- This is the same battle described in Rev. 17:14
- This is the battle of Satan (8th king) and his 10 kings against the Lamb
- Satan will be captured as will the leopard-like beast and the false prophet
- “him that sat” represents Jesus (Avenger)
- “his army” represents His angels (Rev. 17:14; 19:14)
Revelation 19:20
And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.
Revelation 19:20
“And the beast was taken,”
- “The beast” here represents both Satan (the scarlet beast) and the Papacy (the leopard-like beast) since Satan is in control of Papacy as the 8th king
- Both beasts are “captured”; one will be destroyed and one will spend time in the “pit” (Rev. 20:2,3)
“and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him”
- The “false prophet” represents apostate Protestantism
- A prophet speaks on behalf of another
- Apostate Protestantism will support the Papacy in the last days
- Apostate Protestantism will work miracles by uniting the world behind the beast (first the Papacy, then the false Christ (Satan))
“with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast”
- This refers to the work of Apostate Protestantism in establishing and enforcing the false Sabbath (the Sunday Law)
- The mark of the beast (see Revelation chapters 13 &14) is the Sunday Law after it is enforced by not allowing any to buy or sell (Rev. 13:17)
“and them that worshipped his image.”
- Apostate Protestantism also deceived those that worshipped the beast’s image
- The image to the beast was formed when the United States passed the universal Sunday Law and became a church-state union
- The world’s countries who worshipped the image (the United States) will follow after its error and accept the false prophet’s deception
- Two of these three (the scarlet beast, the leopard-like beast and the false prophet) will be cast into the lake of fire and one will be cast into the “‘pit” (Rev. 20:2,3)
- The two cast into the fire and destroyed forever at the 2nd Coming are the leopard-like beast and the false prophet
“These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.”
- The “lake of fire burning with brimstone” represents eternal destruction (Rev. 20:10,14,15)
- This lake of fire is at the beginning of the 1000 years!
- The false prophet and the papacy will never exist again because when the wicked are raised up at the 3rd Coming they are not going to believe their lies again!
Revelation 19:21
“And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh. “
Revelation 19:21
“And the remnant were slain”
- This remnant refers to the rest of wicked humanity
- All the wicked will be slain except for Satan and his angels
“with the sword”
- This is the avenger’s sword which represents the power of His word (Rev. 19:15)
“of him that sat upon the horse,”
“which sword proceeded out of his mouth:”
- This again describes Jesus’ power
- Jesus only has to speak and the war is over!
“all the fowls were filled with their flesh.”
- This refers to the total loss of life
- The birds will eat up the dead
- Compare Ezekiel 39:17-22 and Jeremiah 7:32,33
- This is the total destruction of the wicked at the 2nd Coming of Jesus
