Revelation 16

Revelation Chapter Sixteen

The Seven Last Plagues

Introduction

  • Revelation chapter 16 is a continuation of the theme introduced in Revelation 13, expanded on in Revelation 14, and further discussed in Revelation 15
  • This theme is the mark of the beast and what happens to those who reject it or accept it

Those who reject the mark of the beast:

  • Will not be able to buy or sell (Rev. 13:16,17)
  • Will be threatened with death (Rev. 13:15)
  • Will be reaped as part of the saved (Rev. 14:16)
  • Will sing the song of victory (Rev. 15:2,3)
  • Will walk on the sea of glass (Rev. 15:2)

Those who accept the mark of the beast:

  • Will drink of the wine of the wrath of God (Rev. 14:9,10)
  • Will be trodden in God’s winepress which is part of His wrath (Rev. 14:19,20)
  • Note that this implies that this event (the winepress) is part of the 7 last plagues
  • Will receive the seven last plagues which is His wrath (Rev. 16:1,2)
  • The seven “last” plagues are introduced in Rev. 15:1
  • The seven last plagues are “ the wrath of God” (Rev. 15:1)
  • The seven last plagues represent the end of God’s wrath (Rev. 15:1)
  • The seven last plagues will occur at the end of earth’s history
  • God’s people who exist at the time of the seven last plagues are called “those who had conquered the beast and its image” (Rev. 15:2)
  • They have conquered the beast by refusing its mark (Rev. 13:15-17)
  • They have accepted God’s mark (seal) and are called the 144,000 (Rev.7:3)
  • They sing the song of Moses and the song of the Lamb, which are songs of victory
  • They are sealed which means that the investigative judgment has ended
  • They are sealed which means that the 5th trumpet has begun (Rev. 9:4,12)

Revelation 15:5:

“After this I looked, and the temple of the tent of witness in heaven was opened.”

Revelation 15:5

“the temple”

  • The temple here described is the temple in heaven

“was opened”

  • The temple was open, which refers to the investigative judgment which is ongoing
  • Probation is about to close since God’s people are seen as saved (seen on the sea of glass singing a victory song, Rev. 15:2,3) and the temple is about to be filled “with smoke” and no one “could enter” (Rev. 15:8)
  • The plagues are about to fall

Revelation 15:8:

“and the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and his power, and no one could enter the temple until the seven plagues of the seven angels were ended” (emphasis supplied).

Revelation 15:8

“filled with smoke”

  • The temple is “filled with smoke” which means that the fire of God’s wrath has begun
  • The temple no longer can be entered because the investigative judgment is over and no further cases will be heard
  • Probation has closed for everyone
  • The plagues are now going to fall

Revelation 16:1:

“Then I heard a loud voice from the temple telling the seven angels, ‘Go and pour out on the earth the seven bowls of the wrath of God’”.

Revelation 16:1

“a loud voice”

  • A loud voice is usually associated with judgment in Revelation
  • This voice announces the beginning of the seven last plagues
  • This voice announces the beginning of the executive judgment
  • This means that the investigative phase of judgment has ended

“the wrath of God”

  • God’s “wrath” is the seven last plagues (Rev. 15:1)
  • This marks the beginning of God’s wrath on the wicked
  • These plagues are not to bring repentance since it is too late (probation is closed)
  • These plagues will occur after God’s people are sealed (Rev. 7:1-4) and are the “harm” described in Rev. 7:2,3
  • These events will occur after the 3rd angel’s message since it warns of the mark of the beast and God’s wrath
  • These events will occur after the beast and its image exist and have created their mark
  • These plagues will confirm that the wicked refuse to repent (Rev. 16:9)
  • These plagues represent God’s vengeance upon the wicked for their actions toward God’s people (Rev. 6:10; 16:5,6)

Revelation 16:2:

“So the first angel went and poured his bowl on the earth and foul and evil sores came upon the men who bore the mark of the beast and worshiped its image.”

Revelation 16:2

The “first”:

  • Suggests that these are sequential
  • This is the first of seven plagues
  • This first plague is physical
  • This first plague is sores on mankind

 “poured his bowl”

  • This refers to his bowl of plagues (Rev. 15:1,7,8)
  • The plagues of Egypt (Exodus 7:17-12:39) were literal plagues
  • The seven last plagues of Egypt fell only on the Egyptians who symbolize the wicked (the first 3 fell on Israel and Egypt)
  • The plagues of Egypt were aimed at the worship of false gods ( frogs, Nile, etc.)
  • The seven last plagues at the time of the end will also be literal and fall only on the wicked
  • The seven last plagues at the time of the end are also aimed at false worship (the false Christ)

 “on the earth”

  • The first plague will fall on the “earth”
  • This refers to Rev. 7:1,3
  • This is the “harm” that will occur to the earth after the four angels are released
  • This “harm” occurs after the 144,000 are sealed
  • These plagues will fall after the close of probation

“bore the mark of the beast and worshiped its image”

  • The seven last plagues fall on those with “the mark of the beast”
  • The mark of the beast occurs after the universal Sunday law is enforced (Rev. 13:17)
  • Those with the mark of the beast are those who accept the beast’s false day of worship (Sunday) at the time of the end and by so doing accept the false Christ

 “sores came upon the men”

  • Greek “helkos” translated sore means ulcer, boil, sore or suppurating wound
  • These sores will persist (Rev. 16:11)
  • Satan as the false Christ will not be able to heal them
  • The plagues are all about doubt, just as Lucifer made the angels doubt God in heaven, God will now use the plagues to make the world doubt that Satan is god
  • Earlier Satan tormented Job (representing the righteous) and now the wicked will suffer
  • Job represents  God’s people at the end of time
  • Job lost everything (family, friends, wealth security, health)
  • Job was tempted to lose faith
  • Job had to depend totally on God
  • Job was Satan’s special target of wrath
  • Job overcame thru God’s power
  • These sores demonstrate that God is the Creator
  • These sores demonstrate that Satan is not the God he claims to be, since he can not heal them
  • Each subsequent plague will further prove that Satan is not who he claims to be and will lead the world to conclude that he is vulnerable

Revelation 16:3:

“The second angel poured his bowl into the sea, and it became like the blood of a dead man, and every living thing died that was in the sea.”

Revelation 16:3

“into the sea”

  • This plague is poured “into the sea”
  • The first  plague was poured “on the earth”, specifically, mankind with the beast’s mark
  • The final plague will be poured “into the air” where Jesus and Satan will do battle
  • Prior to the plagues God has kept His four angels from harming “the earth or the sea or the trees” (Rev. 7:2,3)
  • These plagues are connected to Rev. 7:2,3  (harming the earth and the sea) and will not fall until God’s people are sealed
  • The four angels will be released after God’s people are sealed (Rev. 7:2,3) and the 5th trumpet will begin (Rev. 9:1,4) after they are sealed
  • Therefore, the plagues will overlap the 5th, 6th, and 7th trumpets

“the blood of a dead man”

  • This plague will turn the sea into “the blood of a dead man”
  • This plague is aimed at the sea which Satan claims he created but God will prove otherwise
  • Each of these plagues will demonstrate that Satan is a liar
  • Satan as the false Christ has claimed to be the Creator of this world, the plagues will prove he is a false god
  • The seven last plagues parallel the plagues on Egypt which were aimed at false worship
  • Egypt was known for worshipping false gods including the River Nile
  • At the time of the end the world will be worshipping Satan as the false Christ and the punishment will be the same

“every living thing died that was in the sea”

  • This plague will not be universal or mankind would not survive
  • The death of “every living thing” in the sea will greatly affect the world’s economy and its food supply and Satan cannot change it
  • Just as there will be a literal famine, there will be a spiritual famine on earth

Revelation 16:4:

“The third angel poured his bowl into the rivers and the fountains of water, and they became blood.”

Revelation 16:4

“into the rivers and the fountains of water”

  • The third angel now pours his bowl into the rivers and fountains of water
  • These rivers become blood
  • This poisons the fresh water supply making the water undrinkable
  • This plague will not be universal or the world would not survive
  • New wells will be drilled in order to survive, just as in Egypt (Exodus 7:24)

Revelation 16:5:

“And I heard the angel of water say, ‘Just art thou in these thy judgments, thou who art and wast, O Holy One.’”

Revelation 16:5

“Just art thou”

  • Now John hears an angel say that God is “just” in these judgments
  • The wicked are reaping what they have sown

“in these thy judgments”

  • These are the judgments the souls under the altar had “cried out for” (Rev. 6:10)
  • These are the plagues which will fall on Babylon (Rev 18:4,8)
  • These are God’s final wrath (Rev. 15:1)

Revelation 16:6:

“For men have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink. It is their due!”

Revelation 16:6

“men have shed the blood of saints”

  • The reason this is just is because these men “have shed the blood of saints and prophets”
  • Therefore, it is just to make them drink blood
  • The saints referred to here are those who were killed during the lives of these wicked people (or this would not be just)

 “saints”

  • The saints are those who keep God’s commandments and faith in Jesus (Rev. 14:12)
  • They keep the true Sabbath (not the false Sunday) and they worship the true Jesus (not the false Christ)
  • These are the saints who were killed during the 2nd and 3rd angels’ messages

“prophets”

  • The prophets described here are end-time prophets just as the saints are end-time saints
  • This text confirms that God will have prophets in the last days

Revelation 16:7:

“And I heard the altar cry, ‘Yea, Lord God the Almighty, true and just are thy judgments!’”

Revelation 16:7

“the altar cry”

  • This voice is heard agreeing with the prior angel’s praise
  • This voice is coming from the altar and represents the souls who cry out for judgment and vengeance (Rev. 6:10) during the 5th seal
  • This further connects the 5th seal to last day events (it is already connected to the close of probation, see Rev. 6:11)

“judgments”

  • These plagues are God’s judgment on the wicked
  • These plagues or judgments will fall after the close of probation (Rev. 6:10,11)
  • These plagues or judgments fall after God’s people are sealed (Rev. 7:2,3)

Revelation 16:8:

“The fourth angel poured his bowl on the sun, and it was allowed to scorch men with fire”.

Revelation 16:8

“on”

  • The first 3 plagues are poured “into” Greek “eis
  • The next 3 plagues are poured “upon” or “on” Greek “epi
  • The last plague is poured “into” Greek “eis
  • These differences suggest a different emphasis:
  • The first three plagues occur “in” suggesting a primary change in the earth or sea causing the sores or blood
  • The final plague will also occur “in” the air where the battle is fought between Satan and Jesus
  • The 4th thru 6th plagues occur “upon” suggesting these events affect mankind secondarily after a change in the sun or firmament or Satan’s world control

 “the sun”

  • The fourth plague involves the sun
  • The change will be in the sun
  • The effects will be “on” man and beast
  • This plague will cause the worst famine the world has ever seen, especially, since it follows the results of the 2nd and 3rd plagues on the world’s food supply from the seas and rivers
  • There will be extensive drought, and fires will result
  • The world will be covered with smoke and heat
  • This plague is not universal or no one would survive
  • Men are scorched with fire
  • The sun has been worshipped and its day has been made holy
  • God now shows that the sun is not worthy of worship nor is its day special
  • God now shows that Satan does not have power over the sun which Satan claims to have created

Revelation 16:9:

“men were scorched by the fierce heat, and they cursed the name of God who had power over these plagues, and they did not repent and give him glory.”

Revelation 16:9

“men were scorched by the fierce heat,”

  • The change in the sun causes severe warming which leads to men being scorched

“they cursed the name of God”

  • The wicked “cursed the name of God who had power over these plagues”
  • The wicked are now realizing that Satan may not be the God he says he is
  • The wicked are now realizing that God is in control

“they did not repent”

  • The wicked will not repent, which is consistent with the fact that probation has closed

“they did not repent and give him glory.”

  • They also refuse to glorify God even though they are now recognizing that He is in control and not Satan
  • God’s creation week can be symbolized by seven things: light, atmosphere, vegetation, sun, sea, humanity and God’s day of rest
  • Satan changed God’s day of rest to Sunday, all of the other creation symbols will be involved with the plagues
  • God is showing the world who is the real Creator

Revelation 16:10:

“The fifth angel poured his bowl on the throne of the beast, and its kingdom was in darkness; men gnawed their tongues in anguish”.

Revelation 16:10

“poured his bowl on the throne of the beast”

  • The fifth plague will fall on the throne of the beast
  • Which beast is reigning at the time of the end?
  • Revelation describes several beasts: the beast that ascends (Rev. 11:7), the great dragon (Rev. 12:3), the leopard-like beast (Rev. 13:2), the lamb-like beast (Rev. 13:11), the image of the beast (Rev. 13:14,15), the scarlet beast (Rev. 17:3), and the eighth king  (Rev. 17:11) described as a beast

Who are these beasts?

  • Revelation’s beasts:
  • Ascending beast (Rev. 11:7) --- Satan
  • Great dragon (Rev. 12:3,9)  --- Satan
  • Leopard-like beast (Rev. 13:2) – Papacy
  • Lamb-like beast (Rev. 13:11) ---United States
  • Image of beast (Rev. 13:14,15)–United States
  • Scarlet beast (Rev. 17:3) --- Satan
  • Eighth king (Rev. 17:11) --- Satan
  • There are only three possible answers

Which of these three beasts is described as ruling the world when Jesus (the Lamb) returns?

Which of these three beasts battles with the Lamb at the end of time?

  • The answer is found in Rev. 17:11-14)
  • The answer is the 8th king (the scarlet beast)
  • The answer is Satan reigning as the 8th king
  • Satan, the dragon, who ascends to power in the last days

Where will Satan reign in the last days?

  • The answer is found in Rev. 11:7,8)
  • The beast that ascends is Satan and he will kill God’s two witnesses (the Old and New Testaments)
  • This beast will reign in the city where “their Lord was crucified” (Rev. 11:8)
  • Satan will reign in Jerusalem, Israel
  • This is confirmed in Daniel where Satan is described as the abomination that makes desolate (Dan 8:12-14, 11:31) who profanes the temple in Jerusalem

 “its kingdom was in darkness”

  • The 5th plague will fall on the throne of Satan and will put Jerusalem in physical darkness
  • It is already in spiritual darkness (Rev. 11:8) and called Sodom and Egypt
  • This plague will also fall on Satan’s kingdom, which means it will be world wide, since he will be the world’s ruler at that time
  • This plague will make Satan’s kingdom appear vulnerable which will lead to the final world battle
  • This plague further proves that Satan is a false god

Revelation 16:11:

"and cursed the God of heaven for their pain and sores, and did not repent of their deeds".

Revelation 16:11

cursed the God of heaven for their pain and sores,”

  • The world now recognizes:
  • That God is responsible for these plagues
  • That Satan can not solve these problems
  • That Satan is not who he claims to be

 “pain and sores”

  • The sores are still present which means that the plagues are sequential and suggests they occur over more than just one literal day (see Rev. 18:8)

“did not repent of their deeds”

  • But the wicked still refuse to repent
  • The “deeds” which they refuse to repent of are the deeds by which they will be judged (Rev. 20:12)

Revelation 16:12:

“The sixth angel poured his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, to prepare the way for the kings from the east.”

Revelation 16:12

“the great river Euphrates”

  • The sixth plague involves the river Euphrates
  • This river is in the Middle East and flows thru Iraq

“water was dried up”

  • Its water will be dried up
  • The drying up of the water will “prepare the way for the kings from the east”
  • Since all the other plagues are literal it is reasonable to assume that at least some of this plague is also literal
  • Since Satan will be reigning in Jerusalem at the time of the end and losing world control an attack on Jerusalem is likely
  • Satan will be surrounded by Moslems who want control of Jerusalem
  • This scenario is supported in Daniel 11:44-45 where an attack from the east is alluded to
  • Dan. 11:44,45 are related to the plagues since Dan. 11:40-45 involve the time of the end and the close of probation (see Dan. 11:35)
  • This scenario is also supported by the 6th trumpet which describes a battle related to the River Euphrates which kills “a third of mankind” (Rev. 9:15,18) and is followed by the Second Coming
  • This battle is also described as occurring in the valley of Jehoshaphat (Joel 3:2,12) which is in Israel and occurs just prior to the Second Coming
  • This drying up can be seen as the loss of world support for Satan (especially the Moslems) or as a literal drying up of the river allowing armies to advance on Israel or both

“to prepare the way for the kings from the east.”

  • The kings of the east are the Moslem countries east of Jerusalem
  • The plagues have made the world lose confidence in Satan as the false Christ and he now is going to be attacked
  • Satan will realize he is in trouble and will set up 10 kings to help him control the world (Rev. 17:11-14)
  • These 10 kings will help him destroy Babylon (Rev. 17:16-18)
  • These 10 kings will help him fight the Lamb (Rev. 17:14) and will be destroyed

Revelation 16:13:

“And I saw, issuing from the mouth of the dragon and from the mouth of the beast and from the mouth of the false prophet, three foul spirits like frogs”.

Revelation 16:13

  • John now describes three foul spirits
  • John sees these spirits coming out of “the mouth of  the dragon and from the mouth of the beast and from the mouth of the false prophet”
  • Coming out of “the mouth” means these spirits are under the control of the corresponding beasts

 “the dragon”

  • The dragon represents Satan

“the beast”

  • The beast represents the Papacy

“the false prophet”

  • The false prophet represents apostate Protestantism

 “foul spirits like frogs”

  • These spirits are “foul” and look like frogs which means they are repulsive
  • These are demonic spirits (Rev. 16:14)
  • These demons will be sent out into the world by Satan, the Papacy, and apostate Protestantism

Revelation 16:14:

“for they are demonic spirits, performing signs, who go abroad to the kings of the whole world, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God the Almighty.”

Revelation 16:14

“demonic spirits, performing signs,”

  • These demons will perform miracles to convince the world to follow them
  • They will go to the kings of this world to get support for Satan who is reigning as the 8th king

“to assemble them”

  • To gather them for battle
  • These demonic spirits will be sent out to the kings of the world to gather them for battle

“for battle on the great day of God the Almighty”

  • This will be the final great battle on earth
  • This battle will be called Armageddon (Rev. 16:16)
  • This is the same battle that Joel described in the valley of Jehoshaphat (Joel 3:2,9-16)
  • This is the same battle described in the 6th trumpet (Rev. 9:15) which will kill one-third of mankind
  • This is the battle alluded to in Dan. 11:44-45
  • This is the battle that God will cut short to save His people (Matt. 24:22)
  • This is the second woe (Rev. 9:12-21)

Three demons paralleled with the 3 angels:

Satan sends                       God sends

Sent to world                     Sent to world

Gather for destruction         Gather to save

Message of doom               Message of life

Defend Satan’s kingdom      Establish God’s kingdom

Destroy life                        Save life

Receive judgment               Prepare for judgment

Revelation 16:15

“(’Lo, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is he who is awake, keeping his garments that he may not go naked and be seen exposed!’)”

Revelation 16:15

“lo, I am coming like a thief”

  • Jesus describes His Second Coming as like a thief in the night (I Thess. 5:2; Matt. 24:43,44; II Peter 3:10; Luke 21:35)
  • Jesus Second Coming will surprise the world because they thought He was already here

“blessed”

  • God’s people are called “blessed” if they are awake (see Matt. 25:1-13; 24:42)
  • This is one of the seven blessings of the book of Revelation

“keeping his garments”

  • This blessing is for those who are keeping their garments
  • The garments refer to Jesus’ righteousness (Matt. 22:11) and also to God’s law
  • Both of these were under attack by the false Christ
  • Without this protection men will be “naked and be seen exposed”
  • The two things that will protect God’s people in the last days are God’s Law and faith in the real Christ
  • These both will be attacked by Satan:
  • A false Sabbath will be enforced
  • A false Christ will be worshipped
  • This blessing is similar to Daniel’s described in Dan. 12:12
  • Daniel says that those who wait and come to the end of the 1335 days will be blessed
  • They are blessed because the Second Coming is near

Revelation 16:16:

“And they assembled them at the place which is called in Hebrew Armageddon.”

Revelation 16:16

“And they assembled them”

  • Satan’s angels now gather the world together for its final battle (see Joel 3:2)

“Armageddon”

  • John now tells us where this battle will occur
  • This battle will occur at Armageddon
  • This word comes from “Har” and “Meggido”
  • The Hebrew words suggest “mount of destruction”
  • The Greek words mean “mount of the congregation” or “mount of assembly”
  • Satan desires to “sit on the mount of assembly” ( Isaiah 14:13)
  • No actual geographical site has been identified for this mountain in Israel, however, all of the other plagues are literal suggesting this is also a literal site
  • Daniel centers all of the last day events on Jerusalem (Dan 11:31-45) including the battles
  • Joel also places the world’s final battle in the valley of Jehoshaphat in the Middle East (Joel 3:2)
  • Satan will be reigning in Jerusalem at the end of time which also makes this the most likely site for this battle
  • This battle is also described in the 6th trumpet (Rev. 9:15,18) where Satan is allowed to kill a third of mankind
  • The Battle of Armageddon is a real battle which is :
  • The final battle over who will control the earth
  • The worst war mankind has ever seen (Rev. 9:15,18)
  • The “battle of that great day of God” (Rev. 16:14)
  • Going to kill one-third of mankind (Rev. 9:15,18)
  • The Battle of Armageddon is a real battle which is :
  • Going to involve nuclear war
  • Going to involve all the nations of the world
  • Going to be interrupted to save God’s people (Matt. 24:22)
  • Going to be interrupted by the Second Coming
  • The Battle of Armageddon will prove that when sin reigns death is the result
  • The Battle of Armageddon will prove that God was right and Satan was wrong
  • The Battle of Armageddon will show the universe that sin destroys itself
  • The Battle of Armageddon will prove that Satan is a liar

Revelation 16:17

"The seventh angel poured his bowl into the air, and a great voice came out of the temple, from the throne, saying ‘It is done!’”

Revelation 16:17

“seventh”

  • This is the last plague
  • This plague is universal
  • This plague corresponds to the 7th trumpet (Rev. 11:15-19)
  • This plague corresponds to the 7th seal (Rev. 8:1) where heaven is silent (empty)

 “into the air”

  • The final plague is poured out into the air
  • This plague is poured “into the air” because this is where the battle between Satan and Jesus will occur
  • Jesus will not touch the earth but will meet His saved “in the air” (I Thess. 4:17)

 “a great voice”

  • The voice from heaven is God’s voice
  • This voice comes from heaven, from God’s throne room

“it is done”

  • This means that the plan of salvation is complete
  • This means that Daniel’s time of trouble (Dan. 12:1) is about to end
  • This means that the great tribulation Jesus warned of is about to end (Matt. 24:21)
  • This is the third “woe” (Rev. 11:14-19)

Revelation 16:18

“And there were flashes of lightning, loud noises, peals of thunder, and a great earthquake such as had never been since men were on the earth, so great was that earthquake.”

Revelation 16:18

lightning, loud noises, peals of thunder”

This description parallels the events of the 7th trumpet (Rev. 11:19): lightning, loud noises, thunder, and an earthquake

“a great earthquake”

  • This earthquake will be the greatest earthquake the world has ever seen
  • This earthquake is also described in the 6th seal (Rev. 6:12-14) where “every mountain and island was removed from its place”
  • This earthquake will be associated with the sun becoming black, the moon like blood and the stars falling (Rev. 6:12-13)
  • These same heavenly signs were described by Jesus as occurring after the great tribulation (Matt. 24:29-31) and just before Jesus is seen coming in the clouds
  • These same signs are described by Joel as associated with “the great and terrible day of our Lord” (Joel 2:30-32,3:15,16)

Revelation 16:19:

“The great city was split into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell, and God remembered great Babylon, to make her drain the cup of the fury of his wrath.”

Revelation 16:19

 “the great city”

  • The great city is seen as being split into three parts
  • What city is “The great city”?
  • In Revelation there are two cities called the great city:
  • Rev. 17:18 “the great city which has dominion” is the scarlet woman (Papacy) and her city is Rome
  • Rev. 11:8  “The great city which is allegorically called Sodom and Egypt, where their Lord was crucified”  is Jerusalem
  • Which of these two cities is in existence when Jesus returns?
  • Rev. 17:16-18  The 8th king and his 10 kings will destroy the scarlet woman and her city before Jesus returns
  • Rev. 18:1-24  This entire chapter describes the destruction of Babylon (Papacy-Rome) before the Second Coming because the world is described as shocked and watching its destruction and standing afar off
  • Which city is where Satan will reign at the end of time?
  • Rev. 11:7,8  The beast that ascends is Satan and he will kill God’s two witnesses in the city where their Lord was crucified (Jerusalem). This city will then be known as Sodom (immorality) and Egypt (false worship) because Satan reigns there.
  • Which city is the focus of the Battle of Armageddon?
  • The Battle of Armageddon will be fought in the Middle East in order to remove Satan from power in Jerusalem

 “split into three parts”

  • This splitting of Jerusalem will be caused by this great earthquake, which also will bring down every other city in the world
  • This is not the same earthquake as the one that ended Satan’s reign in Jerusalem (Rev. 11:13)

“and God remembered great Babylon”

  • Babylon is now mentioned separately, which also suggests that it is not the great city which is split

 “great Babylon”

  • Babylon here represents all apostate religions
  • Spiritual Babylon is responsible for:
  • Deceiving the nations (Rev. 14:8; 18:23)
  • The blood of the saints (Rev. 18:24)

“drain the cup”

  • Babylon will “drain the cup” of God’s fury means that God will show no mercy

Revelation 16:20

"And every island fled away, and no mountains were to be found”.

Revelation 16:20

“every island fled away”

  • This verse confirms that this is the world’s worst earthquake ever
  • Every island and every mountain will disappear
  • This same description is found in the 6th seal (Rev. 6:14)

Revelation 16:21

“and great hailstones, heavy as a hundred- weight, dropped on men from heaven, till men cursed God for the plague of the hail, so fearful was that plague.”

Revelation 16:21

“great hailstones”

  • This is the final portion of this plague
  • Hail that weighs “a hundredweight”
  • Hail weighing about sixty six pounds!
  • This hail God has stored up for this day (Job 38:22-23; Ezekiel 38:22)
  • This hail will level the earth and destroy any hiding place

“cursed God”

  • Men will not repent but will curse God
