About the Yellowstone BisonWebsites"Yellowstone Buffalo Slaughtered." The Wilderness Society. 6 October 2008. Buffalo in Yellowstone are being ruthlessly slaughtered when they wander off of their designated land in Yellowstone National Park. Local herders and rangers are concerned that the buffalo are carrying brucellosis, which can wipe out whole herds of cattle. The buffalo are tested for exposure to brucellosis, but not if they actually have the disease, so many bison that have only been exposed and are not infected are killed. Yellowstone National Park is the only home to America's genetically pure and wild Buffalo, and even there they are not safe.
"Stop the Slaughter: Yellowstone's Buffalo Herd Must be Protected." National Resources Defense Council. 6 October 2008. http://www.nrdc.org/land/parks/pbuffalo.asp About one third of the National Park's buffalo have been killed off by the Montana Department of Livestock with the National Park Service assisting them in the massacre. The Department of Livestock claims that the cattle surrounding the park are at risk of obtaining brucellosis from the bison, even though there are no recorded cases of cattle contracting brucellosis from a buffalo, and all the cattle in the area have had a vaccination against it. The National Resources Defense Council says that slaughtering the bison violates the park's mandate to protect the park and its inhabitants for future generations. This website lists some of the reasons why the buffalo killings is unfair and inhumane, as well as some solutions to the problem.
