Red Oak

  • Species name: Quercus Rubra
  • Native to the U.S.
  • Its greatest growth period is in the spring and summer. With the greatest bloom occurring some time around mid-spring.
  • The flowers of this tree during bloom are pale yellow
  • Northern Red Oaks tend to have a longer life span than compared to other trees.
  • They usually reach their maximum height of 100 feet within the first 20 years of their lifetime.
  • The Northern Red Oak is able to grow in almost any soil.
  • Beautiful colors in the fall (red mainly)
  • The Northern Red Oak grows all up and down the East coast.

 

Wildlife benefits:

·     Red Oaks provide habitats to bird, mammals, amphibians, and many other types of animals.

·     The leaves and shoots of oaks provide food for deer and rabbits not to mention acorns which provide food to over 100 species of vertebrate animals.

 

What do humans use it for?

·     Red Oaks are most commonly used for shade if parks, lawn, and other places.

·     Another huge use for the Northern Red Oak is for limber.
