I have been employed within the zoo industry continually since 1968. During that time I have worked as Keeper, Head Keeper, Assistant curator, Curator and Zoo Collections Manager in Private, Commercial and National Zoological collections both in the United Kingdom and the Middle East. By virtue of my expertise in differing areas I am able to offer deeper insights than some others with a zoo background.
I have extensive expertise in a wide variety of fields and am able to ''turn my hand" to practically anything within my chosen career. I am practical, honest and dedicated to my chosen profession. I have been described as a person of "stubborn principle" and as such am not a 'yes man' and am nobodys fool. I will tell you what I percieve as wrong but I will give praise where it is deserved.
As a member of the Secretary of State`s list of Zoo Inspectors I had the opportunity to be part of Zoo inspection Teams and also to inspect as an individual. This has allowed me to look at zoos from an entirely different angle from which I have gained immense benefit and further honed my expertise.
Fifteen years ago I set up two of the most successful zoo related groups on the internet, Zoo Biology and Zoo News Digest. I continue to "own" and moderate these on a daily basis. Through these groups and along with my years in zoos I have a very wide range of friends and colleagues. The groups themselves are the most widely read of all zoo related publications. By virtue of my ownership of these groups I have acted as advisor and private consultant to a large number of private individuals and zoos. I have probably viewed more newspaper links to zoo related stories than any other living person. With the knowledge I have of what appeals to the press I can build you a portfolio of 'future' stories after spending a few days studying your collection and talking to staff.
I can offer advice and assistance in project planning, staff training, advertising, aquisition and the full range of general zoo management services. Advertising through Zoo News Digest reaches more people in more zoos than any other publication. I am sometimes available to 'stand in' at any collection whilst staff are ill or on sabbatical or perhaps while a post is waiting to be filled. I am prepared to travel anywhere and, other commitments nothwithstanding would move almost immediately.
In April 2004 I decided to take "time out'' to travel to visit zoos around the world and so learn something about the other side of the coin. I have visited most of the zoos in the UK as well as Turkey, South India, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, Laos, Java, Cambodia, Philippines, Hong Kong, Macao and others. Along the way I have advised and suggested as well as writing honest critiques of conditions I encountered.
