Out on the Water, Caching by Boat designed by ELTADA I am VERY excited to announce my first geocoin design! There is just so much to say about this coin - I am just not sure where to start. But I will start at the beginning and if you make all the way to the end, well, then THANK YOU! BACKGROUND I knew as soon as I stumbled across the Geocoin Forums and began my research that I would be minting a coin. I forced myself to sit back and think about it and not rush into anything as I am often known to do. A couple of months later after boring my husband to death about the whole topic, I decided to go forward with having a geocoin made. I knew I wanted something that would be a "personal" coin plus appeal to others with similar interests. So I thought long and hard about caching and what aspects of it really excited me. It didn't take long to narrow down the topic of the coin to boat-access only caches. Less than a month after my husband and I started geocaching (in 2007), we were up at the family cottage and decided to go after some caches in the boat. I was surprised to see a couple placed in spots that I had often visited as a child with my parents. Being able to take the boat to some of these beautiful places and have the bonus of finding a cache...well, there was just nothing better in my books. So somehow, this would need to be the theme of my coin. I started to sketch a few things out and was quickly reminded that I could NOT draw! It was pitiful! So I moved to the computer and got no further ahead. Turns out I am pretty good at digital imaging but be it pencil or mouse...I CAN'T DRAW! I needed an artist and some research led me to Jamie of Mad Hatter's Neverland. So I needed to provide Jamie with some details on what I wanted. So I put together some photographs that I had taken in the area to depict the scenery on the front of the coin. The boat was a combination from photos of my father's boat that he had built himself (the Lynda Lu) and my father-in-law's boat that we nicknamed "Charlie's Angel" -- it's a 1969 outboard that we still use and is currently sitting in my garage waiting for fair weather. But what to put on the back? I am not sure how I came upon the idea of the map -- it was most likely an idea that had spun out from one of the countless brainstorming sessions with my husband. It's actually a loose copy of the small craft nautical strip chart for the area near the cottage. Once I had that in place, I wanted to add some "firsts" to it -- the first boat-access only cache we found and the first boat-access only cache we placed. The text on the front was a poem I came up with and the text on the back is our caching nickname spelled out using the phonetic alphabet that I had learned when I received my Radio Operators Certificate Marine (basically a license to operate a VHF radio in Canada). Jamie did a wonderful job of translating what I was telling him onto the screen. He put up with all my indecisions and my constant peppering of questions. I was lucky enough to be able to acquire the services of Tsunrisebey to have my coin minted. Her honesty and integrity drew me to her and she did not disappoint. Not only did she go above and beyond to assist me and help me create the coin from my mind's eye, I can honestly say she became my friend. There is nothing like six months of constant emailing back and forth to establish a friendship!! Thank you Steph! So after 7 months, I have samples and am proud to offer my geocoins for reservation/sales -- see Ordering Details section below for more information.
