Ellen specializes in helping individuals (21 and over) and couples with depression, anxiety and relationship issues.

Ellen uses a type of therapy called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.  CBT helps individuals with depression and anxiety:
  • Understand how your thoughts, behaviors, and social interactions impact your mood.
  • Learn to challenge your negative beliefs about yourself, others and the world at large.
  • Learn to stop catastrophizing and to remember that difficult moments do pass.
  • Learn and practice tools to tolerate distress without falling apart.
  • Learn specific techniques to lessen the frequency and intensity of troublesome symptoms, i.e. mood problems/depression, fears, phobias, social anxiety, panic.
  • Pursue activities that provide meaning, pleasure, balance, and enhanced well being.

With couples, Ellen teaches practical skills using CBT and other evidence-based treatments to:

  •  Improve communication and thus, each partner's understanding of the other.
  • Teach partners how to empathize with one another.  Empathy is practiced in sessions and homework is given outside of sessions to help couples to nurture their relationships.
  • Learn tools to negotiate and compromise without resentment.
  • Learn to forgive and repair the relationship.
Ellen also specializes in work-life balance/enhancing well being, coping with chronic illness, grief/loss, and CBT treatment for weight loss (www.thoughtfulweightloss.com) and for insomnia.

Learning these tools are key to living a happier life.  Often in less than 20 visits, clients are feeling better;  their work and social functioning are improved.
