Career Advice

Following Divine Guidance

posted Mar 8, 2011 8:30 PM by Ellen Mahloy

I, like so many people who pursue careers in natural health and metaphysics, did so because I felt called.  Called to service, to serve a purpose greater than myself, to accomplish more than meeting my own needs and fulfilling my own desires.

I began the immense task of changing careers.  Some things I did during my transition worked well and other things did not.  Things that I thought would work in other business situations, did not apply to my new career.  I had to rethink and reexamine my assumptions and concepts about how to do business... business as a spiritual healer.

Metaphysics is all about non-ordinary reality.  Having a metaphysical career is kind of a pickle because business success often requires a solid grasp of ordinary reality... marketing, pr, strategy, etc.

The recipe for a successful metaphysical career is 50% following Divine guidance and 50% establishing a unique business model that embraces both standard business practices and unusual ways of conducing business.  I don't have it all figured out yet, but the concept that I am bouncing around in my head is what I call the "Expert Business Model".

Intro to my Metaphysical & Natural Health Career

My job history began in high school.  I held several positions as a waitress, cashier and in retail sales.  Though I came from an upper middle class household, my parents wanted me to get job experience, learn to manage money and to gain interpersonal skills.  My father said working would build my character and I agreed.

College was much the same.  My parents paid for my tuition and board and I waited tables to pay for my books, supplies, food and entertainment.  After I graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1992, I held various jobs and found my niche in corporate project management.

My career took off after I answered telephones at a major financial institution and rose through the ranks to eventually oversee the complex demographic databases supporting an innovative and acclaimed information based strategy.  From that role, I became a consultant and business analyst to various organizations doing website development, business model creation, mentoring and workshop leadership.

I had no plan to leave my career path or industry to pursue a different career path or industry - and most especially not one in metaphysics or natural health - but that is what I did in 2004.

And wow... was that a shock.  Going from a technology/business consulting career to a career in metaphysics & natural health was like going from being a nurse working in a hospital to become a lion tamer working for a circus.  It was completely different from anything I knew and I found myself trying to figure things out as I went along.

This blog is to help those of you who are pursuing a metaphysical or natural health career.
