this starts with a sequence with background music (Wild Things),
sets a cheerful tone for the drama. shereen is teaching "English for
scientists" at a college, there's ~60 paki students in a classroom and
shereen is at the chalkboard. then shereen is leaving school, walking
through the streets of karachi, pakistan, going home to this little
apartment, eating something quick, changing into gym type clothes (yo
it's got to be a tiny bit racy for those boys who have to watch it with
their gf...but the scene is very tasteful...basically we only see
shereen's legs...below the knees) then shereen is on public
transportation being jostled around, then she is at this building
talking/discussing/inquiring to this old man at the front desk, she
pays some money...then we finally see her enter into this gym room in a
tae kwon do (tkd) outfit and she is alone and the music is still
playing...it becomes more tkd appropriate and she starts
practicing...obviously it's choreographed so she looks so hot and
awesome...but then at the end she kind of messes up and falls and the
music stops as she falls...she hurts herself slightly, but just a
bruise. then the camera pans up and we notice that this room opens all
the way up to the second floor and basically on the second floor
there's a railing and you can look over into the gym room (kind of like
a balcony?). and an older man (~55 yrs old?) is looking over at
shereen, but she doesn't know. he has a beard. during this sequence, before shereen falls, there are credits, but they don't obstruct the scenes too much.
the
man comes down to talk to shereen, basically he gets her life story and
gives her some tkd advice. this way we know all about shereen. she's
an american, graduated from mit recently, ethnically half paki, has
been in pakistan for a few months teaching english, she just found this
gym to workout and practice tkd, she began doing tkd in college, so
she's not a tkd god by any means. basically she doesn't know what she
wants to do with her life so she is in paki teaching eng for a while
traveling and learning urdo. when she is leaving, the man is like,
feel free to come anytime to practice/workout, i'll let the front desk
guy know to just let you in. she seems somewhat surprised, but happily goes on her way.
when
shereen is leaving the building and going through the door she smacks
into a paki guy about her age (b/c she was thinking about how awesome
it was that she met this old man and can come practice and she was
mumbling to herself and wasn't looking where she was going and was
wondering who this random man is). shereen is like, i'm so sorry! the
young paki guy is like, wtf, watch where you are going!! and he just
storms off and shereen looks after him like..ooops!
the
next day shereen goes back to practice and near the end of her workout
the man shows up again and then basically blah blah all about how they
need girls in tkd and not many paki girls do sports and such and he
convinces shereen to enter a tournament with his tkd team. shereen
finds out the man's name is rehmat and he's the tkd coach of one of the
paki national tkd teams. shereen is like...uh..i'm not that good at
tkd...i don't think this is a good idea... at that moment the door
opens and the young man that shereen ran into yesterday walks in...a
bit of slow motion and music (Ta Fan Fang Wei Xiao)
as shereen is kind of shocked and he is too, but then he just rolls his
eyes and goes to the corner and starts getting ready for tkd. rehmat
doesn't lose a beat, he's like, o it'll be okay you'll be great...look
asif is here (pointing to the young man), he is the goldmedalist in
paki (and whatever else awesome), he'll help you get in shape and get
ready for the fight! and shereen is like, ...i guess i could try.
then without warning asif starts practicing a routine and shereen is
just standing there with her jaw open being like OMG HIS HOTNESS AND
HIS TKDNESS!!! (Wild Things
plays.) and rehmat is looking at shereen with a knowing smirk. during
this time more people start coming in to the gym. then rehmat
introduces shereen to everyone including the only girl, keiran, and the
rest of the team (which will be referred to as the sidekick boys).
keiran seems nice. shereen also meets nasreen. she's like a team mom basically, she
kind of takes care of everyone. she's maybe like 45-50 yrs old. in
the
first ep when you meet everyone and she's helpful duing the tournament
doing team mom kind of stuff. then
rehmat is like, asif is going to help you get ready...and keiran seems
irritated and asif has this look on his face like OMG WHAT but no one
says no to rehmat (b/c he's the law and he's like everyone's wise wise
father).
so
then asif is grilling shereen about everything and makes a plan so that
shereen will make weight and get ready for the fight. and there are
scenes of shereen and asif doing this stuff for the next couple of
days. (again Wild Things plays) and there are scenes of shereen during the day at school being distracted b/c she is so hungry...he he.
then
it's the fight. shereen is looking around like whooa...he he sooo many
paki people doing tkd. anyway, during the tournament, there are a few
different fights going on at once at all times. keiran is fighting
someone at kind of the same time as shereen is also fighting someone.
the scene cuts back and forth between both fights. keiran is the
obvious better, more graceful fighter. however, through her
determination and a little bit of luck and shereen uses smarts...idk
that much about tkd...if i was really doing this i suppose it would
require some research, but anyway, idk how to emphasize that even
though shereen doesn't have as much tkd skill she still does a good
job, but not so graceful. keiran's fight is over first, she wins, and
that was also the fight that determined she won gold for the whole
tournament! so everyone is congratulating her! but then in the middle
of everyone gathering around keiran, shereen's fight finishes and b/c
shereen was thinking on her feet, she actually wins (!! Bright Day plays)...well like one fight. so
everyone drops their congratulating of keiran and gathers around
shereen and is cheering shereen. and then there's a shot of
pissed/lonely keiran. anyway,
the team is cheering shereen and rehmat is like, on to international
competition! (the background music stops abruptly right when rehmat
says that.) and we see asif's face is like O_O NO WAY. and shereen's
face is like deer in the headlights.
the closing credits stream while highlights from the episode plays in the background with the song Exit playing.
