Slatyfork | The Elk Springs Section | Elk C&R MapReferred to as "The Lady", the Elk River is a fertile, alkaline, and aquatic environment. The Elk is a limestone influenced stream with free stone structure, the best of both worlds! It is born at Slaty Fork, WV at the confluence of Big Spring Run and Old Field Fork. Thus begins the nearly five mile stretch of headwaters that is commonly referred to as the "Slatyfork" section. After an underground journey of about 6 miles, it re-emerges here at Elk Springs, pumping up out of three huge springheads, sweetened by its subterranean limestone causeway and cooled to a trout-friendly 52 degrees. The Elk River is truly a unique "Gem" among West Virginia trout streams! |
