Procion Process:

Procion dyes from Dharma

Determine the amount of dye you want from Weight of Fiber or Volume Ratio swatches.  Convert to the larger scale.  (For a more on the fly approach put 1/2 a teaspoon of dye in the colors you are considering in different cups, paste with a little water then dissolve in the water.  Add different amounts of each of the dyes until the water in the large bucket you use for the actual textile is the right hue, but darker than the color you want your textile to end up being.)

Pre-wash and dry textile as you would normally launder it.  Pre-wet the textile.  (Put the textile in a clean bucket with water and a little syntrhopol Synthrapol from Prochem or Synthrapo from Dharma if convenient)

This is a cold-water bath so a bucket in your basement is just fine as long as it is large enough to let your textile float around in it freely.

Measure out dye and first third of salt (you want to dump your salt in three large chunks with roughly 1 cup non-iodized salt/gallon of water) and paste with water.  Add water (I like using warm water because I like to keep my fingers warmer and it helps dissolve the dye) and make sure all of the dye and salt is completely dissolved.  Run a rubber-gloved hand across the bottom of the bin to double check there are no granules left.

Open up the textile so it is folded on itself as little as possible and immerse in the dye bucket.  Stir for 5 min.  Let sit for a total of 15 min.  Add 1/3 of salt, stir for 5 min. and check to make sure it is completely dissolved. Let sit for a total of 15 min.  Stir in last 1/3 of salt, stir for 5 min. and check to make sure it is completely dissolved. Let sit for a total of 15 min.  Add Soda Ash (enough for the water to feel warm). Dharma Soda Ash Prochemical SodaAsh Stir for 15 min.  Let sit for 60-90 min. (90 min. is best for darker colors, like black)

Rinse the textile and wash as normal.
