This is more like a holder or board for the Kindle 2 than it is a traditional case or cover.
I use a Belkin Neoprene case for storage and to protect the Kindle while commuting. Other than for storage or protection, I usually use the Kindle as is, without any cover.
After using the Kindle for some time though I realized that there are times when it would be nice to have a little extra room to grip onto (instead of holding the Kindle directly) or some extra space to attach a portable clip-on light.
I checked out the covers commercially available for the Kindle 2 but either couldn't find one that I liked or the shipping costs to Japan were too expensive.
I like do-it-yourself projects though and decided to try making a cover for the Kindle 2. I came up with the holder described below to provide a little extra room around the Kindle.
The mini plastic blackboard that I used is just the right size, plus it is rigid enough to support the Kindle 2 but light enough to hold for a long time. As an added bonus, the indentation is just the right size for the Kindle 2. I also considered using a clipboard (minus the clip) but it was a little too big. An old binder cover or some other stiff material might work too if it was cut down to size.
Materials
mini plastic blackboard (15 cm x 21 cm)
elastic (width 0.5 cm)
thick felt (13 cm x 19 cm)
double-faced tape
packing tape
craft glue
Instructions
1. Clean the board and wipe dry.
2. Cut four pieces of elastic approximately 15.5 cm long. Fold each piece of elastic into a loop and lightly fasten to the board. The ends of the elastic are about 3 cm apart.
4. After checking that the elastic loops are long enough, securely fasten to the board. I used reinforced packing tape.
5. Afix double-faced tape to the board.
6. Cover the board with thick felt. The felt I used was quite thick and provides a nice cushion for the Kindle 2.
7. Slip the Kindle 2 into the elastic loops.
