The idea of a photo story is to incorporate the knowledge the students have developed over the unit of illuminating texts (by both hyper linking and soundscaping texts). This assignment would use a "Zone of Proximal Development" method. If incorporating this into a lesson, students at this point should have completed a hypertext and a sound scape and now they would need to apply their knowledge of both of those to create a photo story. What a photo story is, is the bringing together of images with a melody in the background (be it music, or a sound scape created by the student), but the images used should not be totally random; they should involve some aspect of the students' interpretations of the piece of literature. This task requires a close read of the text and an understanding of what the text is trying to say. This activity is a lot of fun to do, and each student will have unique and creative photo stories. It meshes all of the creative tasks that have been completed thus far, to form a final project of illuminating a text. It works really well, and students can express their interpretations of the text the best through using the photo story, because it uses more senses. There are so many effects and visual stimulation that students can use to make their photo stories.
Here is an example from the book The Woods, by Harlan Coben. Page 145. This was created with Photo Story 3 for Windows. Here is an example of a Photo Story that I have created is for William Shakespeare's play, Macbeth, Act 5 Scene 5, when news has reached Macbeth that his wife has died. This was created using Windows Movie Maker. |
