In one sentence: I am Assistant Professor in Science, Technology and Public Policy at the Institute for Environmental Studies, the VU University Amsterdam.
You are what you like... My research focuses on three broad themes: Production and communication of scientific knowledge: How is scientific knowledge produced? What type of tools do we use to create scientific knowledge, and how do these tools function? How do scientists communicate with citizens, policymakers and other stakeholders, and what is their societal role? How do sciences change with the use of internet? These are questions that I have dealt with in my past and present work. For instance, I am currently involved in a project on the production of climate engineering knowledge, which countries have technical capacity for this, and how this research should be governed. I am also investigating the role of IPCC in the construction and consolidation of scientific knowledge on climate change, and its impact on scientific practices. Distributed governance of environmental issues: Under which circumstances can distributed governance provide effective solutions for environmental problems? How should participatory processes be organized? Under which circumstances do participatory exercises fail? I am currently working on a project on adaptation options for extreme weather events in the Netherlands, by bringing together societal actors and climate modelers. Within this project, I identify how risks about extreme weather events are perceived and communicated by different societal actors. Complexity theory and methodology: I have been working on methodological aspects of complex
adaptive systems, namely on how can we operationalise positive and negative
feedback loops with ARIMA modeling. I have also applied complexity theory and
insights on sustainability transitions theory, to provide a research agenda. I am currently working on conceptualizing collaborative teams as complex
systems, and analyzing the implications of that for organizing such
collaborations, and for knowledge management of different teams. A reasonably recent CV... Can be found below. Present Multitasking I am the principal investigator for the project on "Bridging the gap between stakeholders and climate modellers: demand-driven adaptation assessment for uncertain changes in weather extremes", a 3-year-long project funded by NWO. I am investigating how different sectors perceive and communicate risks and benefits of extreme weather events, and how we can provide different adaptation options for extreme weather events in the Netherlands. More here I am coordinating and teaching the course Decision-Making Processes, for the BSc in Earth sciences and Economics at the VU, and the course "Decision-making processes: a critical assessment of analysis tools for DMP", for the MSc in Earth Sciences and Economics, at the VU. I am also giving lectures at the MSc Environment and Resource Management on Environmental Policy. More here. Together with Arthur Petersen, I am leading the research cluster "Science and Values for Environmental Governance" at the Institute for Environmental studies. More here. I am also seconded to the Department of Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam, where I supervise Masters' students on topics around corporate communication, and the use of new social media. Finally, I am a Research Fellow at the Earth System Governance Project , focusing on the role of knowledge for earth system governance. Further, I am a member of ECREA, and particularly the section on Science and Environmental Communication. I am also a member of Sustainability Transitions Network. More here. During June and July 2011 I have been a Research Fellow at the Innovation in Governance research group, at the Technical University Berlin. My past I have been involved in three European research projects in the past (check out here)
I obtained my PhD degree, at the Amsterdam School for Communication Research and the Amsterdam School for Social Science Research,
University of Amsterdam. More here I studied in the department of Journalism and Mass Communication in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in Greece, where I got my BA degree. |
