Multimedia Learning: Digital Storytelling and Podcasting

Multimedia defined: A form of communication combining text with graphics, page layout, video, audio, animation, and so forth.

 WHAT?     WHY?  HOW?
Multimedia in the classroom may take the form of digital storytelling, presentations, podcasts, video projects, musical compositions, image manipulation and more!
Multimedia may be used with/by students for learning. Educators may employ multimedia activities for use in the classroom and/or assign multimedia projects for students to demonstrate learning. In many cases, the time and effort to prepare the multimedia project may be enough to demonstrate learning. Planning for a multimedia project takes much critical thinking and problem solving, employing higher order thinking skills. Educators must first determine the educational objectives of an assignment. Once that is determined, it is necessary to prepare planning guides for students, keep them focused on the content and then introduce the tool.

Storytelling Tools

  • iMovie (mac)

    • Classroom uses

      • A different way to do a "slideshow" or any type of presentation.
      • Present information with real world images and music to make it more relevant and authentic.
      • Digital storytelling.
      • Synthesizing information taught in class, read from the textbook, researched online, gathered personally, etc.
      • Independent reading projects / book reports.

iMovie makes viewing and working with video as simple as enjoying your photos. iMovie makes it quick and easy to browse your library and create new movies. iMovie has sharing capabilities built right in. In just a few steps, you can add movies to a website, publish them on YouTube, and create versions for iPod, iPhone, and Apple TV.

Create slideshows using your digital photos. With a single click, you can touch-up, crop, or rotate pictures. It's that easy! Add stunning special effects, soundtracks, and your own voice narration to your photo stories. Then, personalize them with titles and captions.
Small file sizes make it easy to send your photo stories in an e-mail. Watch them on your TV, a computer, or a Windows Mobile–based portable device.

iTunes

Intro to iTunes U

iTunes is a proprietary digital media player application, produced by Apple Inc.  The application is used for playing and organizing digital music and video files. The program is also an interface to manage the contents on Apple's popular iPod digital media players as well as the iPhone. iTunes can connect to the iTunes Store via the Internet to purchase and download music, music videos, television shows, Applications, iPod games, audiobooks, various podcasts, feature length films and Movie Rentals, and Ringtones.

When creating content in iMovie or other Apple software products, the user can share the content to iTunes for playback or viewing. The iTunes store recently became a housing area of iTunes U. iTunes U puts the power of the iTunes Store to work for colleges and universities, so users can easily search, download, and play course content just like they do music, movies, and TV shows. iTunes U delivers easy, 24/7 access to educational content from hundreds of top colleges, universities, and educationally focused organizations across the country. And it’s accessible to anyone with a Mac or PC.

Steve Jobs Demos Garageband

Garageband

Welcome to your personal recording studio — where it’s easy to make a song whether you’re a first-time musician or a seasoned pro. With GarageBand, you can create your own virtual band and play along on your favorite instrument. You can record, edit, and mix a song exactly as you want it, in excellent CD quality.

Using Garageband for podcasting, and even digital storytelling, is helpful in that students can generate their own musical accompaniments which is often an issue due to copyright restrictions. The interface is easy to use, but when in doubt ~
Apple provides many tutorials, such as this site for Garageband video tutorials.
