*EXODUS
-Exodus is about the deliverance of God’s people from Egypt and the word means “going out” or “exit.” Book filled with messianic types and symbols.
-Thought to be written by Moses as Jesus speaks about Moses’ writings in Luke 24:44;John 5:46,47
-Israel began with Jacob’s family and numbered 70 men(not counting women/children). Exo 1:5. Israel left Egypt with 600,000 men. Exo 12:37
I. Exodus. Ch1-18 A. Enslavement of God’s people.ch1. A new king came to Egypt which didn’t know of Joseph and saw the great number of Hebrews. Enslaved them. The new king was very likely a change of leadership, and wasn’t familiar with Egyptian History (research hyksos). B. The Deliverer.ch2-4. Israel was enslaved for 400 years as God had told Abram. Gen 15:13. God doesn’t promise life is comfortable. At age 40 Moses kills an Egyptian and flees to Midian. He marries Sephora (a gentile) and tends sheep for another 40 years. Acts 7:23-30. There he’s called to save Israel. Exo 3,4 C. The Ten Plagues and Passover. Ch5-13. Moses asks pharaoh seven times to let his people go. Ten plagues hit Egypt: 1. Nile river turning to blood. 2. Frogs 3. Gnats 4. Flies. 5. Diseased livestock. 6. Boils. 7. Hail. 8. Locusts. 9. Darkness. 10. Death of firstborns -Passover- God instructed the Hebrews to take a firstborn lamb or calf and paint their doorframes with its blood. D. Hebrews Early Freedom. Ch14-18. Hebrews set free. However, they still didn’t have much faith in God and despaired when the Egyptian army pursued them to the Red sea (Exo14) and when they were low on food (Exo16). Both times God saved and provided.
II. The Law. Ch19-24 -Exo19:3-6-God saved Israel to create a nation of priests; a treasure for Himself. -Exo20-God gives 10 commandments. First 4 deal with man’s relationship to God and last 6 deal with relating to others. Now Jesus said that all commandments can be completed by loving God first, and then loving your neighbor. Matt 19:3-6 -The law served to be our “tutor,” it served to point us to Christ. To point out our need for a Savior. Gal 3:24
III. The Tabernacle.ch25-40 -God instructs Moses to build Him a temple so He can dwell among His people. Exo 25:8 -After the gate, the Brazen Altar was found. Israelites offered their sacrifices there. The Israelite would place his hand on the animal’s head, confess sins (symbolically transferring sin to animal), then kill animal. Penalty of sin=death -After Altar, Brazen Laver was found. Lavar means “place of washing.” Priests would wash hands and feet before entering tabernacle. Symbolizing the need to be cleansed from sin before entering God’s presence. Today, its a lot simpler. 1 John 1:9. -After washing in Laver, the priests entered the Holy Place. The Golden Lampstand was huge, and weighed about 94 lbs (1 talent). The Table of Shewbread was made of acacia wood and overlaid with gold. H=2ft,L=3ft,W=18in. 12 small loaves representing 12 tribes were on it. There was golden silverware on it as well. Represented Israel’s dependence on God’s provision. Priests would burn incense on Altar of Incense twice daily to symbolize continual intercession. -Between Holy Place and Holy of Holies was the Veil. Only high priest could pass through. All else would be struck dead. When Jesus died this Veil (well the 2nd one J) was torn in two to symbolize that the high priest was no longer needed to approach God on behalf of others. Matt 27:51 -In Holy of Holies was the Ark of the Covenant. In it was a golden jar containing manna, the rod of aaron, and proof of God’s covenant (thought to be the tablets of the Ten Commandments. On top of the Ark were two golden cherubim with wings touching. Also on top was the Mercy Seat, upon which the high priest sprinkled blood on the Day of Atonment. -However, the final atonement has already been made by Jesus. Rom 5:6-11
